Normy,

Did you have the NNLC on a trip that you were assigned while on reserve? Sometimes someone will call in sick for a trip, knowing full well, that they were going to get a line check. The line check guy will usually stay on that trip and if you got it on reserve (or picked it up in open time), you might have inherited the line check. I got one that way a few years ago, while doing a HKG to SFS leg. Or maybe it's just you.;)

That's exactly what happened. The LCA wasn't happy about it and said he would put it in his monthly report. Apparently, this wasn't the first time that this has happened to him lately.

The line check went well, and the LCA turned out to be a pretty nice guy.

I had a trip in 2006: MEM - ORD - LAX - MEM. There were TWO LCA's on the trip, plus the captain and me. One LCA would observe the other giving a line check, then vice versa.

As you can imagine, I was looking forward to this like a proctoscopy.

I drive 5 hours to work, and about halfway there for this thing my wife called - my dad was in ICU in Birmingham with a ruptured colon and severe peritonitis. I immediately called in sick and just turned east, getting there right before visiting hours ended.

The next day my dad woke up and apologized for making me call in sick. I told him he got me out of two line checks! He did 31 years at red-book NWA, so he understood totally....

Long story short, I stayed with him for 2 days, then had to go back down and evacuate my family for Katrina.... Good times.....

Did I hear from the company? Yes, as a matter of fact - the gentleman who posts here (think Maria Shriver's little sister in Marine hot pants) called (I think it was him, anyway). The ACP's called everybody in the hurricane zone to check on us. I told him I'd get back to work as soon as we got some gasoline down there, and he was super cool about it.

Huck,

You did the right thing. You're a good Son. My question is how did you get your dad to play along.;) Glad he's o.k., and I assume that your home made it through that little blow without incident. As well, just goes to show that these management guys do care. About what, I'm not sure, but they do care.:)

House was fine, but barn demolished and many many trees to cut up.

Pop's still kicking, but can't eat jalepenos any more....

Norm same thing happened to me 5 years ago, The guy put it in his monthly report, so you can see how much good that does.

Jeez, I started to puke thinking of you flying in the right seat and me in the left! I can just imagine how sick a LCA would feel sitting in the Jump Seat!!!;):D

May not have been someone calling in sick either. I was scheduled for a regulatory line check on the second day of an R-block. Called to ask if I was released until then, and scheds said "No, we could still use you on day 1." Sure enough, they got greedy, assigned me a trip on day 1 that included deicing, and therefore an extra half hour of block time. Made me illegal for the line check (8 in 24), so they bumped me off that. Of course, they had already bumped the original Capt, and went though 2 more Capts to finally fill the trip. Also, the LCA was still on the trip, so I imagine that someone got a no-notice out of the deal. I wonder how much it actually cost to operate that trip?

This is one of the problems with the "optimizer/sodomizer" - no room for friction... and there's a LOT of friction in the system. Eventually they (the bean counters) will figure out that "optimization" can wind up costing a lot more than allowing the slack. Sometimes they're not real quick on the uptake and need to have things pointed out to them. (In language they understand. $o to $peak.)
