Not saying something else... Most of the time, guys/gals do not jump seat instead of using company paid travel. To say "a majority of ATI crews don't use it" is patently false. What Sandman said is accurate. Jumpseating to start a trip is near impossible for some of the lines we fly for AMC (combis)- they originate outside the CONUS. Commuting for the AMZN/DHL stuff would be a different story. Like Sandman said, folks will occasionally jumpseat because it can shave close to half a day off the end of your trip depending on where you live.

Exactly. Gotta have home basing or gateway travel or there's no way they could expect people to be in place to start those trips. And that's the rub... use home basing across the board (like ATI does) and it can be a liability to the pilot group when it comes to negotiating. But it's mgmt's choice to pursue those AMC contracts and at the same time it's held over the pilot group's heads that home basing is "part of their comp". I agree with Motorclutch on that part of it. I mean, look at Kalitta- the nature of their scheduled lines means they pretty much have to deadhead via a commercial airline ticket. But you don't hear their management claiming those costs as part of the pilots' comp.

Home based or not, you shouldn't settle for less, not a dime less.
We're flying heavies for crying out loud. That b.s. that "we won't be competitive otherwise" is the most outrageous statment in the cargo business. 60,000 lbs. of Amazon cargo is probably worth more than the airplane itself. Hopefully newhires at ATI will start pushing he Union.
