Default Passport expiring

My passport expires in a couple months. Obviously can't fly without it. I assume I'll have to make an appointment for same day service at the passport office here in Detroit. Just curious to know what your experience has been? How soon should I make the appointment? Or is there another way go about this?

The closest passport office for me has a reputation of being difficult to work with. On the other hand I have had great expedited service from G3 Visas and Passports, once to replace an expiring passport and just last month getting a second passport issued. Passport photos at AAA, a few hours of work at my desk at home and a trip to the FDX dropoff -- done.

It is not the cheap approach, however.

I did same day service with my local passport office a while back, and it went great. I brought a letter from my boss on the company letterhead explaining why I needed same day service, but they never asked me for it once I said I was a pilot. Took 3 or 4 hours, but they called me when it was done.

I Took it in to the DTW passport office and picked it up the following day.

Last month a friend of mine went into the DTW passport office expecting them to do it same day, but they made him pick it up the following day since he wasn't traveling internationally. He wasn't happy about having to drive back downtown.

I'll be sure to get a letter from my company. Hopefully I don't have to go back a second time. When I called the number to schedule the appointment, I can only make it two weeks in advance. So I've got some time to schedule it.

G3 has a solid reputation... They have done my passports and visas for 13 years now.

I did mine in Detroit on Friday. You call and make an appointment on an automated system, I made mine for the next day in to the office at 9:30 pick up at noon. Just have the paperwork filled out and ready to go.

For future reference, be aware that numerous countries require six months of validity left on your passport to enter, and all European countries in the Schengen Agreement (basically EU) require 3 months beyond your intended date of departure.

Some of the countries that require six months are Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, Belize, Honduras, and many countries in Asia, including China.

Hopefully your not flying to any of these soon with your passport expiring in 2 months.
