I have been experimenting with Atkins lately and got my weight under 200 after a few weeks, which is great. But come on I am not giving up some wine and what happens with the Atkins diet while I am doing that? In addition, my coworkers love to go to Panera every Friday and have bagels. They are not all going on Atkins diet just for my sake. So I am trying for a moderate position on diet and remain flexible about it. But I do it on the days I can and I always get some exercise.

I think that the problem with Atkins' diet is that it is only designed to be a relatively quick solution and it is most certainly not a long-term diet. Like you said, this is true with many diets. I single-out Atkins because of its popularity.

There are exactly zero "quick" diet solutions that are conducive to life-long health.

Big thing I do: Don't drink sodas, and make sure that you throw away the brownie that comes with your crew meal!

I have heard that it takes 30 days of doing something for it to become a habit. Good or bad. Try starting slowly, first 30 days wake up do 50 pushups and 50 situps. Progress from there. Soon you will not be able to get your day started before working out just like brushing your teeth!

I'm in my mid 30's (closer to 40) & find that eating a well balanced meal once a day with maybe a shake, fruit or something keeps me feeling and looking young. Also, not eating before I sleep also helps. Exercise is another key part, helps with stamina.

Most of the guys at my company look like walking heart attacks. You have to make taking care of yourself a priority and a lifestyle.

+1 for Insanity and P90X. You can do these workouts in your room. I climb the stairs when we are in a high rise.

TRX Suspension trainer is super sweet. Workout in a park if the weather is nice. There is a great set of stairs in the Botanical garden in Sydney across from the Opera House.

Pack a jump rope. Great cardio, can do in a hotel room (or somewhere at hotel) and takes up virtually no space in luggage. If you can slowly build up to 10-15 minutes of nonstop jumping, it is said to be the equivalent of 30 minutes of running (approx 800 calories). Others have mentioned solid cardio routines (p90x etc.) which are also good along with a healthy diet...

Just started P90X and realized that you gotta look like Tony Horton to get through all the workouts! Many of the routines can be done in confined space with limited or no equipment - hence, I refer to it as the prison workout.

When I ran freight in Mu-2's in the middle of the night was home based and in the best shape of my life. Hit the Nordic Track (flashback eh?) before hand and only ate one meal a night. The regionals and fracts (Sky Chef Catering in 2 inches of butter) began the slow decline into outta-shape-dom. And of course used to be able to take along ready to drink protein meal replacements until the whole no liquids thing. Horton has another series of videos (precursor to 90X) call Power 90 that's not as intense as P90 (x)treme. I'd suggest that as well.

If not P90X, try another DVD based workout that doesn't require any equipment.

Insanity requires no equip.

That's good for seniority progression you know

When I did the full on 13 week/90 day P90X with a regional schedule, it took A LOT of work to maintain schedule. On a typical 4 day, I could get one workout in, 2 if I was lucky. Which meant that my days off sometimes were doing doubles. Usually one of the cadios in the morning and resistance in afternoon or evening. So it'd be 1 on the road, day off 1 would be a double workout, day off 2 a single, day off three a double. This also meant that I'd have to switch the order of the workouts to ensure some rest time for the various muscle groups used. As far as the diet, I just did my best to consume a healthier/nutritionally dense one. Lot of salads and chicken sandwiches. I can't argue with the results though.

When I started it, I was already in pretty decent shape, but it does take some things to a different level using your muscle groups in ways that may be new. I hike, mountain bike, interval sprint, do stairs, etc. But the first few times I did plyo it flat out killed me. Now I freaking love that workout. Kenpo was the same, never did anything like that before so my shoulders and hamstrings would be killing me afterwards. Now, it's such an easy workout that goes by so fast and still burns a good amount of calories. Also, the flexibility is a nice side benefit. Watching the program and trying some of the videos, I decided that doing a "warm up" of sorts before going full on would be the best. So before I started, I did kenpo, plyo, stretch, and yoga once a week for three weeks. Seemed to make it a lot easier. I know many people that have been sedentry for a while or just mildly active and just jump right into it and are in such dire pain that they just give up after a week or 2.

And as far as the rooms go, it can be funny. I can get a plyo work out done in some pretty tiny spaces, but I am literally wall on some of the moves and having to be creative to get max benefit.

Bottom line, eat less and move more to slim down and get in shape. And as others have said, try to eat more natural/non processed foods, try to add colors to you diet in the form of fruits and veggies. It's a lifestyle change for sure. It doesn't really matter what you're doing, P90X, insanity, wolverine workout, crossfit, or something you came up with yourself or had a trainer put together. You just simply have to do it and stick with it.
