I live in nj, born and raised...
I would live near one the east coast corridor line train stations...
Safe and reasonable apartments casm be found in the following...
Rahway, edison, metuchen, hamilton.
I would probably take new brunswick... college town... ez to find a roommate if you want and the train to ewr runs at least 2x per hour. You don't need a car to live in new Brunswick so you can spend an extra couple dollars on a nice place.
You can also live up in Belleville nj.. there is a light rail station to Newark penn transfer to the north east corridor.. I did that my first year of the airlines. Montclair/glenn ridge the neighboring town is very nice but rent is very high... a little bit of a different commute but doable.
Pm me for more info if you want.
