Comments like yours dont help. The only people I hear talking like you are the ones who either never lived in a city or never had to pay any bills.

I live in nj, born and raised...

I would live near one the east coast corridor line train stations...

Safe and reasonable apartments casm be found in the following...

Rahway, edison, metuchen, hamilton.

I would probably take new brunswick... college town... ez to find a roommate if you want and the train to ewr runs at least 2x per hour. You don't need a car to live in new Brunswick so you can spend an extra couple dollars on a nice place.

You can also live up in Belleville nj.. there is a light rail station to Newark penn transfer to the north east corridor.. I did that my first year of the airlines. Montclair/glenn ridge the neighboring town is very nice but rent is very high... a little bit of a different commute but doable.
