Mesa pay and work rules are always at the bottom of the industry. They are the cockroach that should die but never will.

Especially with my extended layoff from aviation. They'd likely throw my app in the trash.

That's why I'm saying start courting them now. Get on with a regional for a year or 2 and then make the jump. Either place would be amazing to retire from.

If you are miserable going to work and it starts effecting your marriage, time with kids, health, etc from commuting just to sit around, it’s not worth it. A word of caution. Read up on Envoys reserve life. They are pretty miserable there especially if you will be a DEC in NYC for 2 years.

So, just to give an update, no DECs have gone to NYC in a long time, you can hold any base as CA after 8-9 months. Reserve sucks for commuters just as much as it sucks everywhere else (apart from CommutAir, where it sucks for everyone).

DEC and QOL don't really exist in the same sentence anywhere. You'll have at least a few years of FOs upgrading over you, keeping all DECs in the bottom for a long time. The only places where this DOESN'T happen are the ones who aren't staffed well, and understaffed airline means scheduling abuse, which again means poor/no QOL.

Well, it seems like any regional I upgrade at, I'm most likely not going to be able to hold IAH, DFW or ATL.

OO. ATL for 6 months as an FO, DTW for 6 months as CA, back to ATL for the remainder of your time. We have plenty of issues here but pay is finally decent.

Honestly?

With 14 years left, if I were you, that's what I would do.
You're at a point where legacies aren't really an option - not because you won't make it there, but because you won't reach enough seniority to have decent QOL there outside the most junior bases. Good corporate/charter gigs can be fun, give you good QOL, and pay a decent salary.
Either that, or aim for Spirit/Frontier, or be a regional lifer.

I know what I would do.

Not a bad path - but "remainder of your time"?

18 year hiatus from flying might make him pretty much unhireable at legacies. Or at least you need one heck of a story to explain it.

Hey no problem! We are just trying to be honest with you. QOL is important and you need to know what you are getting yourself into. A lot of people get here and realize it’s not what they thought and then quit. Some love it and it’s the best thing ever.

He had a medical issue. Easy to explain. Also great LCCs in his neck of the woods. ATL would also be a super easy commute for him.
