Compass Update

Just looking for an update on Compass Airlines...

Are the hiring plans maintaining at 250 for 2008?

Is it still a good time to get hired with the planned hiring or has the window of opportunity passed?

What is the upgrade outlook at this point?

Is it easy to adjust your schedule? i.e. drop trips, trade trips, etc.

Are the lines productive?

How many a/c do they anticipate taking delivery of in 2008?

Will they interview someone with 121 experience but short of the 1000multi req by 300-400 hours?

JungleBus 11-25-2007 12:19 PM

Wait a month or two and they'll interview anyone with a pulse...

LIOG41 11-25-2007 12:30 PM

please elaborate

Yes.

Still a great time to get hired and be a very senior FO. A CA seat would come thru either attrition and/or growth. To my knowledge, NWA can still operate 18 more 76 seat a/c. It's going to be either XJ or CPS.

See above.

Is it easy to adjust your schedule? i.e. drop trips, trade trips, etc.

Right now, all this is done manually but hopefully soon, an automated process will come online similar to JetBlue's which I hear is quite good.

Are the lines productive?

That is the goal. Right now, if you live in domicile, the lines are pretty good. Contractually, the company must try to build 85-93 (something like that) hour hard lines.

27

I hear they are sticking to their posted mins, but being an optimist, my advice is to submit your app.

Best of luck.

Hey thanks for the reply, I appreciate the honesty. Look forward to any other insight...this would be a lateral move for me from a good regional but not commuter friendly.

bata 11-26-2007 06:40 AM

should hire 370 pilots by 2009.

sorry...the info aircraftdriver gave you is pretty good except I think it will be less than 250 in 2008 because they hired more than 110 in 2007. My buddy that started class friday before last was in the mid-150's.

My remark was basically saying that with the opportunity for a quick upgrade gone and a pretty lackluster contract, there aren't many really good reasons for experienced people to come to Compass anymore so I suspect they'll be hiring lowtimers rather soon.

On further review, JungleBus is correct. They have hired more than 110 in 2007, so there will be less than 250 new hires in 2008 unless more aircraft orders are announced at some point (i have no rumors on that one).

Again, best of luck!

BlueMoon 11-29-2007 06:55 PM

What if NWA starts parking 9's?

JungleBus 11-29-2007 08:26 PM

And replacing them with what, exactly? Even if they get the maximum number of E175s allowed by the scope clause, the E175s AND CRJ900s have less than half of the seats of the DC9 fleet. Given how vigorously NW defends their market share, I rather doubt they're going to give up so much capacity so readily. The DC9s will solder on until replaced by E190s, C-series Bombardier, or similar - hopefully at mainline!!!

New Guy

I start at compass soon. Can anyone give me info on the training? What is the home study like? What does the week of ground at MSP cover? How long is the training in Montreal? I have heard 30 days to 65. Any info would be great.

Sorry I don't have any answers for you, just a question: When do you start? I also am starting somewhat soon (Feb 1st) was and wondering how many classes are starting before mine.

Thanks

Starting Over 12-10-2007 01:59 PM

Jan 18th (it was Dec 14th and they moved it up)

Thanks. Sorry to sidetrack the question. I want to know this stuff too. I’m also interested in knowing what seniority numbers the new guys are getting right now. I’ve been told anywhere from 150-200 but lets see if we can narrow that down a bit.

XtremeF150 12-10-2007 05:01 PM

seniority numbers

Well, I guess it is your lucky day...They just sent out an updated email with the seniority lists on it. Aug 8 is the most junior CA at seniority number 73. As far as FO's go number 82 is the most junoir FO that is out of IOE and listed as line qualified his/her hire date was 8-17-07. As far as the most junior guy on the list? Well that would be number 152 hired 11-17-07. Hope that helps some. We also just recieved acft #7 and I heard today that #8 is waiting in Brazil for a crew. ;)

Talked to some people who just finished the home study. They said it was pretty in depth. The week in MSP touches on stuff in the home study (pretty sure). The training in YUL lasts about 30 to 45 days. I was up there for 35. I have not heard of anyone being up there much more than 40 days. The hotel up there is great. Lots to eat and drink, free breakfast, free dinner on some days. Close to a bus stop to get downtown for a couple bucks each way.

Starting Over 12-10-2007 05:42 PM

Thanks for the info. I was told my class would be in the 160's. Is the training done by flight safety?

Schwartz 12-10-2007 06:05 PM

The Training is done by CAE contract instructors.

2-15-08 here... How many are there in each class? I'd like to start earlier but I think the classes are full. Can't wait to start!!! :D

Starting Over 12-11-2007 05:23 AM

I think there is six in each class. That is what it says on this site if you go to Compass.

FL410 12-11-2007 06:08 AM

I was going from SEA - YEG the other day and heard Compass on the radio. Are they flying to YVR or do the routes go to SoCal? Thanks.

skid 12-11-2007 06:57 AM

MSP to YVR and also MSP to MSO are about the furthest west they go.

All the classes I have seen lately have had 6 and seem to be starting every week. I'm sure there is some down time coming for the holidays though. We definately broke that 110 they were planning on hiring. However It was mentioned that maybe they just wanted to have 110 line qualified by 12-31-07. This would seem much more accurate.

matlok 12-11-2007 03:16 PM

I was told I'd be in the 150s, but the 160 seem more likely. I just want to get started!!!

You maybe in the 150s.....The most junior guy in my class was number 152....We go back for our 5 MSP days on Monday, and I don't know if there was any classes after us, so your class may be next?

I know there's at least one in Jan, if not two. I'm up for Feb 15, so there's prob. one more in Feb too. I sent Craig an email - guess I'll just have to wait and see....

What's the home study like? They said it was fairly intense. Any chance it will work on a Mac, or is it Windoze only?

I will not work on a Mac, luckily my wife has a PC so I could get it done. I just finished the course, I figure it took me about 60 hours to do it. It takes time to go through the material, take notes, and then pass the exam. There are 30 general subjects, each with an exam. The systems portion has I believe 12 or 14 subjects, then 1 systems test. I actually got a lot out of the course, it was a good review.

I have a friend who was hired to start on the 21st of Dec, but his date was pushed back a month. I finished training in Montreal last week and start IOE on the 17th. Training was not to bad be prepared for changes to the schedule as they move things around due to instructor schedules. Some of the instructors you will deal with are straight CAE, while some will be Compass instructors.

I love competing to win, and I won! I'm dumping my commute to Philly!

If you guys fly the 175 into SDF (and I know you will cuz CPS is supposedly building a mx facility there) lemme know; brews for fellow AWAC alumni are on me!
