Sometimes when companies receive Gov contracts, they will need safety inspectors for each department. Companies sometimes name their pilot safety inspectors so their salary will be paid for by the money from the contract...

My anal retentive boss made me the company's "safety officer" for no apparent reason. The kicker is that I get to do more work with no increase in pay (already making peanuts to begin with ).... I'm ****ed beyond belief. I could justify this entity creation if our company had a large flight department with many pilots and aircraft, but we only have 1 plane and 2 pilots for pete's sake.
Show him your required new budget items for the new Safety Officer position. Start with attendance at the USC Aviation Safety Program Management School (2 weeks, $3000+); followed by a few of their other classes. (See USC Viterbi School of Engineering : Aviation Safety & Security ) Then add in the cost of a contract pilot to cover for you while you are away at school. Are you already a member of NBAA? If not, add in the cost of that to join...... then add in the cost of going to the yearly NBAA Conference so you can attend the safety related seminars. Find one of the companies that prepares Aviation Safety Manuals, and add in the cost of having one of those professionally done for your company. And that's just a start. Present him with the budget for these things, and see how bad he wants it. Having said all that, I agree with one of the other guys who posted....... if you can get him to spring for the $$$ and time required for your safety training, it is not a bad thing to have in your background/resume.
