$600 a day parking in Shannon. Suggestions?
Hi Guys,
I'm a International newbie planning a first week of October 2012 trip from the U.S. to Shannon (EINN) in my companies CJ4. Talking to Jeppeson, Universal and Rockwell Collins flight support. So far, Jeppeson has been the most responsive and provided quite a bit of detail including "third party charges" that included $300+ "ground handling" at our fuel stops in Goose BAy (CYYR) and Keflavik (BIKF). Is this something we can get around? But what really concerns me is parking for 10 days in Shannon is over $6200 USD and only slightly less in Dublin. This for a under !7,000 lb airplane. Should we move the airplane to another field after clearing customs? Any suggestions on these or any other issues would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why pay a third party "handling fees".....you don't need a "handler" in Goose/Kef/Shannon.
Have them simply file your flight plans and call the FBOs yourself...or if you are an ARINC customer just file your flight plans online. Universal/Jepp/ARINC etc can turn a $2500 trip into a $25,000 trip very fast...and our experience is that they don't make it any easier. They don't get any special pricing on Fuel/trans/hotels that you can't get on your own. We are not talking India or China here, Western Europe is not complex - even if you are pretty new at it.
If you do go the "handling" route you can cut the bill way down by avoiding the hotel, trans, fax, fuel etc charges. Do your own. $75 to fax a flight plan to your hotel, another $75 to fax it to the FBO? - forward the front desk the email as you check out and ask them to print the 8 pages. Keep the rest on an iPad. Also check out World Fuel. No surcharges if bill is paid within 14(?) days...etc etc. I find that the little things are easier to do myself then they are to babysit through a handling company.
One small example - when you land in Shannon they "arrange transportation" by pointing you to a cab on the curb...and add 30% for that, more if they invoice you. Save $200 by using your credit card or grabbing cash at the ATM.
Parking is expensive anywhere in Europe...places like Nice are $2000/day...plus all the airports within a reasonable distance know this and are also expensive. Just part of the game. The majority of the time its not worth running the plane to reposition, as the next place wacks you again with landing/slot/handling fees. The good news? - fuel is usually crazy expensive in most of Europe, but EINN has pretty good prices...a quick look shows around $3.78 today.
Good Luck / Have Fun!

..A lot of good advice in NowCorporate's post. It's those service charges that will kill you on international trips. APIS submission, calling FBO's, customs, booking hotels and rental cars or cabs can be done quite easily yourself. Handling companies charge way too much to simply make a phone call.
You're going to save a lot of money in those areas by putting forth just a little bit of effort. If your owner is concerned about parking fees, however, that's probably a sign maybe they shouldn't be flying to EU in the first place.
