I thought you can’t buy a stock of a bankrupt company?

Default Hertz Used Cars

I checked out some Hertz used cars in my area and it looks like the prices are pretty good, but I'm not an expert on car buying so take it FWIW. Look for yourself in your area:

https://www.hertzcarsales.com/

In my area they have a 2020 Infiniti QX60 PURE SUV with 7100 miles for $32,900 no haggle price. It has a new MSRP of $45K and a KBB value of $37K to $41K. Lots of cheaper cars like 2019 Hyundai Tucson's priced in the mid-teens.

The way I understand it, it all depends on how the company restructures, but usually the stock gets wiped clean. It sounds like a random pump n dump from Robin Hooders, but there's always a chance Hertz somehow navigates BK without wiping their stock and recovers to pre-COVID19.

Make sure to get a good pre-buy from a mechanic you trust if you go that route.

From a friend in the wholesale/auction used car world: Now is not the time to buy a used car, rental or otherwwise. Because of the rental car industry dump of inventory, used car values across the country are about to take a major hit. The number of parked rental cars is STAGGERING. Toss Kelly Blue Book numbers in the trash bin for at least a year.

If you plan on holding it for a long time, you might get a pretty good deal versus buying new. Just don't plan on the used car being worth anything for a long while.

Caveat emptor.

That's true. Wife and I have some Vietnamese friends that run a local nail salon. They were over 2 months without work. When they bought their last vehicle they got some really bad advice plus getting ripped off by the dealer and wound up with way more than they can afford. They have a 2019 Toyota 4Runner that a month ago would sell for $36K-$38K, now truecar has it $5K less than that. And they hardly put any miles on it, only 3800 right now. They owe over $42K on it so they're pretty much SOL. Payments are over $800/month and that's very difficult for them. Other than a possible refinance there's not much they can do outside of Bankruptcy. I'd like to get them into something like a base model Hyundai Santa Fe but there's just too much negative equity right now. A month ago I checked with the dealer we bought from last year and he was pretty straight forward about it saying they needed to wait and pay down the loan, but the good thing was the Toyota would hold it's value well so the negative equity should shrink fairly quickly.

If you had bought one of their old Shelby Mustangs, you would be in high cotton now.
