You ready to be really surprised? Not all airplanes are like the one you fly, some don’t have an intercom that can be used to speak with the other pilot.

You just yell call outs to each other with the speaker on on the takeoff roll? Maybe that’s why everyone’s hearing is so bad.

Either way, just ask the other person to speak up if you have a hearing problem or they’re a mumbler. I can’t understand mumblers without the mask anyway.

The number of people that “can’t hear” because someone else is wearing a mask is kind of surprising. Either people mumble or there’s a lot of people out there with significant hearing damage. Just turn up the intercom or ask the other person to move their mic if it’s low. There’s a reason the headsets have knobs.

Ever since masks became common, I have realized just how much I depended on a certain level of lip-reading to fully understand what somebody is saying to me. After 35 years around airplanes (and close proximity to frequent gunfire), that's not surprising.

What is really comical is watching EVERYBODY (including me) at a hotel or an FBO leaning around the plexiglass blast shield and getting up nice and close to the clerk so you can hear what the H they are asking you...

You wear your mask in the cockpit of your drone?

Honest question: What do you and have you flown. I've flown more than one plane with no hot mike, and yes, we do just say

"EPR"
"Power Set"
"80 Knots"
V1, Rotate

No intercom. not yelled either.

Most wear a headset that only covers one ear or they have the earcup pushed away. Once above 18k, usually people take off the headset and use the speaker. It is loud enough as it is, masks just make the situation worse.

I’ve flown 5 different turbine aircraft, from 5 different manufactures, from late 80’s to almost brand new. All of them had the ability to talk to the other pilot via headset in some form or another.

you can’t even push to talk to the other person? How do you communicate with O2 on?

Yes, you can PTT to the other person if you need to. Also, on O2 just turn the speaker up.

So PTT and wear headsets then if you can’t hear. It’s better for your ears anyway. The decibel range you’re exposed to up there is enough to cause hearing damage long term. I wear earplugs in the back too. I never realized how often I was irreversibly damaging my hearing until I started using the DB meter on my Apple Watch.

Hot mics are annoying anyway, I don’t want to hear someone breathe for 3 hours.

Was just trying to paint a picture of a demographic that tends towards less adherence to mask wearing and distancing. You are correct in that it is irrelevant to what types of symptoms we endure. Sorry that I ruined the value of the thread for you.

Gaiters are actually worse than not wearing a mask at all. The irony here is you would have had a better chance of not getting Covid had you both never worn a mask.

I tested positive as well on 1/6. Here is my experience.

12/26 woke up to an upset stomach. Didn't really feel bad or anything so didn't think anything of it.

12/27 didn't feel any worse.

12/28 had a sore throat, But that is not abnormal for me when I get a cold. Usually it starts with a sore throat from post nasal drip.

12/29 still had sore throat. Felt a bit off, but no fever. Kinda had aches but nothing serious.

12/30 Felt like I had muscle soreness and still sore throat. Noticed some sneezing and kinda felt cold. But nothing alarming. Felt like the beginning of a cold.

12/31 Sore throat kinda gone. Felt better.

1/1 Headache, slight stuffiness. No more sore throat.

1/2/ felt more congestion. Like sinus issues couldn't breathe as well through the nose. At this point im thinking. Damn, head cold! Also noticed detraction of taste and smell. Wife had some spicy stuff and I couldn't really taste it!

1/3 Loss of taste and smell noticeable. Head congestion. No cough no fever. Thought I had a cold.

1/4. Still have head congestion. Head feels like it is in the clouds. Decide to schedule a test.

1/5. Same with the congestion. Just feel like a sinus issue at this point. Notice a slight wheeze if Ive been sitting for a while.

1/6 Take the test. Same symptoms. No fever, no chills. Just feels like a prolonged cold with the slight wheeze.

1/7 Same. No smell. Minimal taste. But not totally gone. Occasional notice a tightness in the chest but nothing serious.

1/8 test results back Positive. Same stuff no taste or smell but head cold feeling better.

1/9 Head cold pretty much gone but taste and smell remain weak.
