Social distancing, masks, lockdowns, etc, are to prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed. At this point, that can't happen anymore, so anyone still doing it, is doing it for political reasons only.

I’ve had some very long discussions on another forum with Xtreme, and while I personally think he’s a bit misguided and could use some time away from his tin foil hat, I’ve seen nothing to indicate he is racist, white supremacist, bigoted, nor alt right. While I dispute many of his rants, if 15 months ago you were to tell me the airlines would be losing billions, our government won’t let you go to a bar, face masks would be everywhere, international borders would be closed worldwide, the country would spend 6 trillion in stimulus, Kobe would die in a helicopter crash and people would forget 3 weeks later, and toilet paper would become a commodity as scarce as endangered animal pelts, mercury free fish, and gold... I’d tell you to put away your tin foil hat.

to me, hospitalizations is the ‘only’ metric that matters. Everything else (deaths, cases, transmissibility) can be politicized. My brother is a trauma surgeon in a large east coast city. They have a world class hospital system there and for the last few weeks of December through most of January - they were full. Ambulances with car accident, heart attack patients were sent to further away hospitals (which were also dangerously close to being full). If you drive yourself, you would get stabilized and then immediately transferred. It was that dire.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t start opening up the world, but that was less than 3 weeks ago, I want to be damn sure that doesn’t happen again. In Dallas (where I live) 65% of Covid hospitalizations were under the age 65 (I assume most had high risk health issues) but that cohort only just became eligible for the jab.

I am still very encouraged about the next few months, and if you look at Europe where the uk varient is the primary strain - they too are seeing a very similar downward trajectory.
