The AP article showed that mandates led to a decrease in new cases. Is it not also possible that the greater number of cases in places with mask mandates could also be attributed to the greater density population centers those are usually associated with. Which makes the apples to apples comparison kind of tough and not proof that masks and mandates didn’t help?

However, for those with an open mind, you must admit it is harder to get a more apples to apples look than this -

How do we explain this?

Pretty sure that NEJM study mainly proves the existence of asymptomatic spread, which is another issue I have seen widely disputed here. Also, they were following guidelines including social distancing and MASKING. Im not saying that masks means zero spread. But I’m also, not seeing the other apple of an unmasked equivalent being the same or better. In fact the biggest takeaway from this that the Navy seems to have is that mitigation measures need to be augmented to include widespread and repeated testing ( https://www.navy.mil/Press-Office/News-Stories/Article/2413465/navymarine-corps-covid-19-study-findings-published-in-new-england-journal-of-me/ ).
