Here is my understanding for the DAL application process; I’m sure there are plenty of others with more insight.
Applications are randomly selected from the application pool and individually scored by a panel. Those applications exceeding their scoring threshold make it to the invite list as long as the date of availability is within a certain window (that window appears to have fluctuated wildly in the past). The rest of the applications will either go back into the pool or go to a stack for interview at a later time (driven by date of availability). Those applications going back to the stack will not be looked at until at least another 12 months.
Applications with an internal recommendation (via their system, not Airline Apps), will get pulled from the pool to be scored by the panel. It appears that you can also get your application pulled for scoring by the panel if you attend a DAL job fair. If those applications do not make the cut, it appears they wait in the pool for another 12-months; however, there are pilots who have received invites after a second internal recommendation within a 12-month window.
Bottom line, you need to get your application pulled from the pool to get scored by the panel. You do this with an internal recommendation or attending the job fair. Otherwise, it may be a long wait for your application to eventually make the random selection to be scored.
My impression is that the panel score will be driven by neatness and formatting, spelling, employment history, leadership, education history, and community involvement. Making a bad first impression with errors (such as gaps in dates or spelling errors) may mean your application goes back into the pool. Have someone who has been selected for an interview or an application review service QC your application. And save some kittens.
By comparison UAL has a computer algorithm, and a computer will select the Airline Apps applicants to be selected for an interview. I think there is a sanity check, but the score is computer based.
FedEx will run a computer algorithm as well to look for certain qualifiers, which tend to change. Those applications selected by the computer will subsequently be scored by a panel, and those making the cut receive the invite to interview.
SWA will just look at resumes to select their interview invites.
