GOL 2018 results call today.

21% margin is reason Delta is investing in the Latin carriers. They are now operating 737-8max to the U.S.

Yeah but there's no money in 737 Max's to the US. They're saving our bacon and are the perfect addition to our armada.

Borrowing $1B to accelerate stock buybacks this quarter. Borrowing for buybacks is a huge red flag. This has been a leading indicator of problems at other companies as the executives try to drive up stock price prior to poor performance news or other issues. However, guidance remains the same...hmmm. This could be an opportunistic move on lower stock price but if they don't pay the loan back by the end of the year as stated it gives me pause. Something to watch.

Seems to me they are actually trying to buy the stock at a lower price........which would be a nice change.

If they really want to return value to shareholders you would think they would put more emphasis on dividends. I guess they are reluctant to raise dividends too much knowing what a disaster it is if they were to ever lower them.

Last time I checked we had way more shares outstanding then UAL and AMR is this still the case?

I'm thinking its opportunistic. At $50 a share, what's keeping Delta from a takeover?
I don't have the whole picture, though.

True. Think of how many airplanes and facilities we have paid cash for. Now, imagine how much money a corporate raider could make financing their value or selling them to a leaseback company.

True, but share count means little to me. Market cap is the measurement that gives a true picture of the value. It hasn’t changed appreciably with all the buy backs. So far it has been an exercise in using dollar bills as kindling but the flame keeps going out. Not a great use of cash and now we are paying interest on the kindling.

It doesn’t have me worried because they are already committed to the buybacks but if the loan is anything but a short term cash management move, we have a problem. The buying at a lower price is fine but the next step is market timing your own stock. If they start doing that we are gambling with borrowed money.
