In many cases HS is the new MS and College is the new HS. It started with the tsunami of government money flooding in since the end of WWII and reached critical mass in the 60's and gets worse by the year. Now that everyone (comparatively speaking) has to go (and does) the educational inflation, grade inflation and price inflation have turned it into a 4 year treadmill/debt factory for many who go to escape reality while pretending to be interdimentional neo-gilded age adult-child hybrids who end up surprised, outraged and entitled when the inevitable happens on the other side of the "experience" that they expected, demanded then ended up resenting.

Meanwhile getting a degree and learning to fly in college is often medical school costs/debt now.

Amazing how the regionals can more than double first year pay AND throw in $30k signing bonuses...it’s like they had money the whole time.

Dean Paul Lindseth took the podium Thursday evening welcoming students back to campus, reminding them it has been 50 years since John Odegard founded UND’s prestigious aerospace program.

He said the aviation trailblazer must be smiling down on them as the School of Aerospace Sciences creates yet another partnership with a major U.S. airline.

“We have the country’s largest aviation flight training program partnering with one of the world’s largest airlines in Delta,” Lindseth said. “With this partnership, we’re continuing to focus on the students and provide them with another career pathway.”

Delta’s Propel Pilot Career Path Program will help the airline identify, select and develop the next generation of pilots.

Starting with eight universities, including UND, Delta’s goal is to provide a defined, customizable and accelerated path for juniors, seniors and recent graduates to reach the Delta Air Lines Flight Deck. Those eligible have until Sept. 5 to apply.

Prepare for take-off

Over the next decade, around half of Delta’s current pilot workforce will reach the age of mandatory retirement, says Brent Knoblauch, 717 first officer and pilot outreach manager for Delta’s campus programs. The airline expects to hire 8,000 pilots during that period.

For the past four years, the airline visited nearly 30 universities, met with hundreds of students in focus groups and worked with administrators and faculty to understand their needs as aviation educators.

“That helped guide us toward finding a solution that not only works for Delta, but for all other stakeholders in the industry,” Knoblauch said. “We know that these students today are on the cusp of one of the largest hiring booms in recent history. We believe it’s important for Delta to be an integral part of their education and development.”

The result is Propel building on Delta’s current pilot recruitment structure. Knoblauch calls it a new “on-ramp” that provides college-aged pilots with four crucial components.

Expedited success

When a student successfully applies for the program and makes it through Delta’s own testing and interview process, they’ll receive a qualified job offer with Delta Air Lines. Knoblauch notes that it’s among the greatest benefits of the program, because it’s a commitment on Delta’s part to expedite the student’s progress to Delta Air Lines.

Propel also offers a customized approach unlike any other airline pathway program. There are three means by which to progress from college graduation to piloting for Delta. Flying for one of Delta Connection’s carriers is the first, and traditional, option. These are the airlines that connect major hubs to smaller, regional airports.

Students in the program can alternatively elect to work with Delta Private Jets in a job share setting: flying corporate aircraft for a set number of days, then returning to Grand Forks to work as an advanced Certified Flight Instructor in a cyclical schedule. It’s a route that both “feeds the pipeline” and has graduates giving back to their alma mater.

Propel’s third route to piloting for Delta is by joining a reserve guard outfit. Knoblauch says Delta will assist students in finding a unit that will hire them as pilots.

“Delta highly values the training and experiences that military pilots receive,” he said. “We want to allow UND students and graduates to serve our nation but still be part of a path to a mainline carrier.”

Each of these three paths, by way of a qualified job offer, have the same timeline – a maximum of 42 months to complete at least 1,000 hours of turbine flight time (750 for the military route). Ashish Naran, another outreach manager with Delta, says it’s quite an advantage to have such an expedited, organized route to being a commercial pilot.

“On an individual basis, there are quite a few variables determining how soon you get an opportunity,” Naran said. “What we’re doing is taking out the unknown. Once you get this job offer, you know you’re going to have a job at Delta as long as you complete the steps laid out in front of you.”

Finally, Delta is committed to providing mentorship to its Propel applicants. Every semester, Delta Days will be a time for experienced Delta pilots to answer questions, give technical/career and lifestyle presentations and teach UND students about the career, on campus. Every student in the program will receive an active Delta pilot as a mentor.

“There are so many decisions in this career, to have someone to talk to at Delta is an incredible benefit and something important to provide for students,” Knoblauch said.

Leading track record

The outreach team says UND was selected for the initial run of Propel due to its satisfaction of a long list of factors. Primarily, they think UND produces leaders – exactly the type of graduates Delta wants leading the next generation of mainline pilots.

“This is a university we value not only because they develop a professional in the cockpit, but also outside of the flight deck,” said Emily Coaker, assistant manager to pilot outreach programs. Naran added that UND has an impressive track record. Hundreds, if not thousands, of UND graduates are currently employed by Delta.

The 800 students at the Chester Fritz Auditorium on Thursday was the biggest turnout the outreach team has had yet as they travel around the country, kicking off Propel’s programming.

“This is a fantastic evening for UND Aerospace,” said Lindseth, who received a large, silk banner from the Delta team recognizing the occasion. “It’s a tremendous period of opportunity in aviation history. In my 45 years of flying, it’s the best time for our graduates right now.”

Earlier this year, UND announced a pathway program with United Airlines.
Well, guess Delta ran out of qualified pilots to hire. Give it 5 yrs, they'll get so desperate they'll even hire guys who have "Airlines" on their resume.

I mean c’mon was the R-ATP 1000 hours if done at an “FAA Accredited University” really reduced from 1500 because these educational facilities provide better training to eliminate 500 hours of outside experience needed that the local FBO student is forced to get?

Orrr is it all about raising the profits of these big schools?

After that law was implemented these schools were booming and so did the tuition. After these mainline pathway programs are established I can only expect the tuition to further increase..... but this generation continues to buy into it because they believe they can get to the flight deck faster than an OTS guy, but worry about the 300,000 debt accumulated afterwards.

Right, and I'm in favor of a relatively tight supply etc. However IMO we won't perpetually benefit from a prolonged supply crisis before something gives. All stakeholders are effectively ignoring the issue right now, which is further providing pressure on supply. But the path we're on is radically unsustainable and will be corrected.

The very thing in question (the asinine college costs from generations of mass unchecked govt intervention to socially engineer society) will drive numerous negative consequences. The most relevant to us will be the eventual elimination of the degree requirement. I'm not saying that pilots with degrees are superior and that no one can or should do it without one, I'm merely pointing it out from a supply perspective. With one fell swoop, the entire industry can instantly remove a 6 figure barrier to entry.

While that will provide some significant level of additional supply for current and future pilots, it will comparitively lower the pressure that we're benefitting from moreso than if we simply addressed the supply chain from a rational infrastructure based perspective. At that point maybe we'll have the right balance and maybe we won't. But with flight training infrastructure pretty much still in the dustbin from the "lost decade" what's taken its place are equally unsustainable cost inflations, ironically paired with large expensive colleges.

So if that's not enough, how will the still potentially crisis level barriers to entry manifest into the howls of relief demanded by the industry stakeholders aside from organized pilot groups? As we celebrate now, we could be greasing the skids for reduced minimums/MPL/Cruise Pilot scams, cabotage, a large increase in foreign visa pilots who will work for less and pushes for increased automation and regulatory relief that, while probably not resulting in no pilot or single pilot airlines, probably will result in some 4 pilots going to 3 and some 3 pilots going to 2. It would be an understatement to say that scumbag FoC operators will bloom like a red tide on our shores as well because both sides of the political isle will not only welcome but demand it.

The current system is benefitting us now, but nothing is being done to address what may likely become a crisis later. Nothing. Medical school costs for big Ed programs aren't the answer no matter who pays for it.

I am not saying you are incorrect to say it is helping the aviation universities, but the reason that they are given preference is consistency in results. There are great instructors out there teaching at FBOs but that is not something that can be relied upon. With the needs that all airlines have coming a consistent good quality is something you want from a supply chain.

Consolidation is happening everywhere, best we get used to it.

I couldn’t agree more with you’re statement. I’ve been thinking for a while we, as an industry, need to be doing more to come up with some reasonable solutions. Because if we don’t, I’m not sure that we’ll like the ones that get forced upon us.
