The same goes for flight attendants. Jeans and open-toed shoes are the most common violations I see.

I can’t see how a pilot can be that selfish and put others at risk if discipline. The FA working the flight who just broke up with a pilot writes up that pilots can jumpseat with beards ect. The Captain of the flight ends up in the CP’s office. Dress appropriately and be groomed.

I’d tell the beard guy I’m happy to take him. However, he’s sitting in the cabin. If there’s not a cabin seat, he’s not riding in the flight deck with a beard. If he couldn’t bother to shave, getting to where he wants to go obviously isn’t a priority.

How about an FAA inspector giving you a check ride?

We allow a certain class of JS rider to have a full beard, if we allow 1 exception then the entire rule pretty much collapses upon itself. FAs can have a full beard and work the cabin. They can also have a beard and ride their JS. What about a pilot who has a beard and sits in the FA JS, is that ok? The entire concern about facial hair and what you wear is arbitrary and silly.

Don't even get me started on how effing stupid a coat and tie while non-revving would be. Buck covered the subject so I won't pile on.

This has nothing to do with policy or etiquette or what “we allow”. All it has to do with is the fact that beards won’t seal on the positive pressure O2 masks on the flight deck. Every mask outside the flight deck including F/A jumpseat is a diluter mask. No need for a positive seal. (Also of no value in a smoke/fume event, despite public perception to the contrary.)

All I stated was he’s not going to ride on the flight deck. If you feel differently when you’re operating that flight, so be it. It’s your prerogative, Captain.

They can't ride either if they have a beard. There is one, and one only exception in the FOM. I won't repeat it but you can read it.

I disagree. I've never disallowed a jumpseater, but I have told a couple of guys they were "testing the limits." The FOM is clear, and unchanged for many years. How hard is it to adhere to the very reasonable FOM rules, like 99% of the jumpseaters do every day? The occasional "beard, t-shirt, and blue jeans" guy is just throwing down the gauntlet to the captain, almost defying the captain to enforce the rules. Why do that?

Totally agree. Luckily I don't think that discussion is being held anywhere, just here in message-board-land.

Agreed. I never put the Captain in that position where he needs to make a “decision” based on facial hair or how I dress. Just follow the FOM. I expect my jumpseat riders to do the same.

Gotta throw the B.S. flag here!!!!!

This has nothing to do with facial hair and mask seal, that is why Alaska air pilots as well as numerous other pilots can fly with facial hair(groomed to certain standards)

It is Delta's desire to have "professional", "groomed "pilots and is in the FOM .....NOT the FAR's

I denied an FAA jumpseater one time because he had on jeans. I would have no problem denying the FAA because of a beard.
