The problem is they have jumped 20% in value the last 3 years. Maintenance is very reasonable if you have a good independent shop.
I completely get what you are saying. I actually like Porsches and the ones you mention could see a place in the rotating collection of garage art. If maintenance costs and total performance were the primary decision points, I would have kept my C7 Stingray or upgraded the wife's Tesla to the Plaid edition. The next rotation of "toy car" in the Gunfighter garage is out of respect for the child who worked so hard paying for college and getting into flight school. If the 1980s version of me knew he grew up and didn't buy a Ferrari, he would have given up in college. Once we replace the SUV with a Cybertruck, the Ferrari will be the slowest accelerating and most expensive car in the garage. Aiming for the lower part of the depreciation curve at acquisition should help offset the maintenance costs over the 2-3 year holding period. Who knows, maybe I'll break even on the purchase price.

If you’re discussing fancy sports cars, and boats with ice makers you’re probably not in desperate need of a company holiday gift.

Ever work for a crappy 135? Long days with no dispatch, junk airplanes, no fatigue policy, 12 day rotations, and all for $50k/year. Ain't no one talking about buying a Ferrari there, except maybe the CEO.

You know Delta is hiring? Ya got yer app in? Sorry. I couldn’t resist. There was a thread a while ago where the ULCC guys were bashing Legacy pilots for saying stuff like that. (Tone deaf, for sure, but still)

And some of us are still saving for kids college and don’t have toys in the garage….yet. We don’t all have cool toys.

We all leave the ****ty RJ, 135, whatever job to come here and have it better. Sadly......things are so gummed up it’s not better. Tone deaf? I don’t think so. #facts.

Wait wait, you sure that’s working for a crappy 135 and not flying E/H model C-130s?

Yup and I didn't pass the online assessment. Hoping to get another chance someday. I have nothing against pilots for majors buying toys, just giving some perspective from someone on the outside looking in.

For a little more perspective, the side hustle is paying for the Ferrari. The backup plan started before having a job at the majors as insurance against having a job at the majors. It worked better than expected.

The golden ticket topic was sidetracked into toys with a comment about raising the bar on "golden tickets" to a sports car. Next come the Miatas and chickens followed by Porsche and Ferrari.

It’s interesting how tone is not fully communicated in written text.

My comment above was written in optimism and admiration. I think it’s cool that some airline pilots can afford a Ferrari. Tbh it’s partly why I pursued the job- the hope of making lots of money while also doing what I love. Gunfighter’s post confirmed to me that it’s possible and I salute him for the hustle. My comment was not written above in sarcasm or snark but it appears it could be interpreted so.

And congrats to the fellas with the golden ticket.
