PB days

PB days. Newbie here. Any help would be great. I have 2 PB days. As far as I understand to be able to drop a trip with a PB day you need to have 100% reserves coverage correct? But i also read you can convert PB days to vacation does that in turn make them able to be used as IVDs? and then use that IVD to drop the trip with lower reserve coverage requirements. It's this a true strategy?

Thanks.

You’ve actually asked a really big question. Huge actually. Schedule Reference Handbook, pdf page 51-57 is the whole story.

Once you understand that, then ask more nuanced questions and you’ll get some really cool answers.

Just a little edit, though: using PB days as vacation days is typically regarded as the least good use for them; or at least the lowest monetary value use for them.

I've read into the handbook. Its not clear on if they can be used or turned into IVDs it only says vacation. I

They can’t be converted to vacation on demand. Unused payback days covert to vacation days next vacation year. As others have posted that is a poor use for them. You can drop a trip with a APD if you still have it and use payback days to cover.

If they are unused, they turn into supplemental vacation days. They can then be used as IVD, just as any other future vacation days. But, I do not believe you get any additional instances of IVD usage - it’s still 2 instances of up to 4 total days

(However, if - repeat IF - your category uses less than 5.5 or 6% of sick for the year, aka “the sick leave contest, you get another 2 or 1 IVD instance respectively).

Thank you, this more or less answers what I'm looking for.

Go to DALPA website and look up scheduling alert 21-11 for a complete rundown on how to use PB days.
Also scheduling alert 22-01 tells how to use the smart sheet on crew resource page to let schedulers you only want to use one PB day or not.

The first scheduling alert very clearly lays out the best use of PB days and how to drop trips with them even if coverage is lacking.

There is also a great discussion/document on your tablet under the ALPA folder. It has strategies to use to maximize the value of the PB day. As a hint, in categories with little to no reserve available days, you can convert any vacation day to an IVD and use that to drop the trip and then cover the lost revenue with PB day(s).

Good luck!

Yep, the scheduling alert covers that, but makes the point that you have to IVD days other than what you want to use your PB day on, ie they won't convert an actual IVD day into a PB day, but the IVD used in conjunction with PB days can drop a trip and place the PB days on high block hour days.

Using the strategies in the scheduling alert, I routinely use my PB days to garner at least 6.5 to 8hrs credit per PB day.
