Default Industry Worst Commuting Policy

I hope that DALPA is aware of and advocating for much needed improvements in this area.

A single confirmed jumpseat flight on company metal arriving at least 30 minutes prior to show time would cost the company nothing and would better align Delta w our peers.

Current Policy:

Delta: Two flights, second one must be on Delta or Delta Connection.

American: One flight. Reasonable attempt. No back up required.

Southwest: One flight on Southwest arriving 1hr prior to show, or two flights on OAL.

United: Two flights on any carrier.

FedEx: One flight on Fedex arriving 1.5 hrs before show.

There is no requirement the second flight must be Delta or Delta connection. That only applies for logical reasons if you want positive space.

FedEx has no protection for offline jumpseat, and also there is a duty limit that includes the time spent jumpseating which makes it not always useful. No protection for offline commutes or even if you bought a ticket either.

CBA.26.J.2

A pilot may use a Company staging jumpseat to position himself to his base for the start of his scheduled trip in accordance with the following:

a. The period beginning at scheduled showtime of a pilot’s inbound jumpseat and ending 30 minutes after the scheduled termination of his first duty period must be less than 13:30.

b. There must be at least 1:30 hours between the scheduled block-in of the inbound jumpseat and the showtime of the pilot’s trip.

I don’t think so…

Again that is if you want positive space. Here is the contractual policy.

A commuting pilot who travels to his base by air will not be eligible for treatment under Section 23 X. 2. unless he has attempted to travel on at least two flights (on and/or off line) that: a. show adequate actual seat availability within 24 hours of the departure, considering the pilot's seniority and the normal load factor of the flight; or, on which the pilot has a jumpseat reservation, b. are scheduled to arrive at his base at a reasonable time before his scheduled report, and c. are separated by at least two hours.

better buckle up. It’s gonna be like it’s never been before imo, especially from airline hub cities.

I don’t think an improvement in policy would in any way change the actual number of pilots occupying the jumpseat to work.

The FOM is not contractual. The PWA policy is lagging but the FOM policy relieves pressure on a lot of commuters.

We actually have two different policies and the ability to book jumpseats well ahead of time.
