Default UAL Contract Campaign

Congratulations to DAL Captain Ambrosi being elected ALPA President. Now with the national politics and drama done - We can concentrate on our contract. Todd Insler is a very bad person and would have made a terrible ALPA President.

We are trying to do what you all successfully did with your last contract. We are trying to take back our MEC.

The bottom half of the C11 update below gives a good recap of where we are with our recalls. ORD and IAD are solid. We are recalling 90% of the remaining reps.

C11 Update

From the Officers, October 16

Your council officers just completed the regularly scheduled October MEC meeting. This week, we attend the ALPA International Board of Directors (BOD) meeting. Status Representatives (the CAP and F/O rep) are Board of Directors members. The ALPA BOD meets every two years and gathers ALPA represented airlines to conduct ALPA International-level business. One such business item will be the election of the four ALPA National Officers.

As you may be aware, there is considerable political fallout on the property over the Tumi TA. Due to the ongoing recalls and their resulting realignment at the MEC table, newly elected Council-5 (EWR) intermin representatives floored a resolution to rescind the UAL-MEC endorsement of former MEC Chairman Todd Insler as ALPA Int’l President. Your officers supported this vote. The resolution is below.

Therefore, be it resolved that the United Master Executive Council hereby rescinds its previous endorsement of Captain Todd Insler for the office of President of the Association, and;

Therefore, be it further resolved that the United MEC will not endorse Capt. Insler for any other ALPA, International office or for any role, and does not support of any role for Capt. Insler at ALPA, International, including Executive Administrator.

This resolution had the support of councils 5 (EWR), 11 (DCA), 12 (ORD), and 173 (GUM) but failed on a roll call vote 5316 FOR and 5338 AGAINST with one abstention.

Further, many of you have asked for an update on the status of the MEC given the fall out from the Tumi TA. That information is listed below.

Recall Completed

C5 EWR: Recall resolutions against the CAP REP/Chair, FO REP/V. Chair, and Sec-Treas. passed. The subsequent council-wide electronic ballot on the recall passed Sep 9. C5 has seated three new interim Reps who are present at the MEC meeting and BOD.

Recall Process Ongoing

C33 DEN: Recall resolutions passed at their Oct 7 council meeting for the CAP Rep/Chair and FO Rep/Vice Chair. An electronic recall ballet will go out to DEN pilots shortly to vote on the recall.

C34 SFO: Recall resolutions passed at their Oct 3 council meeting for all three officer positions – CAP Rep/Chair, FO Rep/Vice Chair, and Sec-Treas. An electronic recall ballot will go out shortly to SFO pilots to vote on that recall.

C57 LAX: Recall resolutions passed at their Sep 30 council meeting for the CAP Rep/Chair and FO Rep/Vice Chair. An electronic ballot will go out shortly to LAX pilots to vote on that recall.

Recall Resolution Pending Next Meeting

C171 IAH: Recall resolutions were ruled untimely under ALPA CBA Article III, Section 3.D.2 that requires fifteen (15) DAYS NOTICE. (Editor’s note: This is to allow preparation so the whole council can engage in the issue. This prevents both sides from parliamentary maneuvers that would not be supported by the council at large.) A meeting has yet to be held.

There is change coming to this MEC. With change comes opportunity and responsibility and it is important for all of us to focus on the business at hand – that is to achieve an agreement that recognizes the value our pilots bring to the company.

In Service,

Jim, Anne, and Chris

Yes, congrats to Captain Ambrosi. He did a great interview on the Delta podcast recently talking about their strike authorization vote and how the RLA can work in our favor right now, especially given the current political climate, as the rail workers have proven.

And thanks to everyone at UA who are working to root out the rot that obviously infested their MEC, NC, and execs and allowed the Tumi TA to see daylight. Whatever the right word it is (treachery, cluelessness, self-dealing, etc) that could be used to describe what caused those people to be able to attempt to foist that abomination upon your pilot group, it also threatened the entire profession.
