Please help me see the light.. I obviously don’t understand this math and decision making.
If there are .. say 20 jets RON in BOS or MCO or AUS there has got to be 40-45 (some international) pilots in the downtown hotel rooms at $300+ each. Every night/365..
Why in the world is it more expensive than opening a pilot base?
Is it possible to have a base without a CPO?
Without crew room, pilot lockers and commuter rooms?
Parking lot cost, I guess?
In all of our bases parking lots are in the least favorable locations, but could this cost really be more than crew hotels plus crew transportation?
There are airlines with a lot more bases/total number of pilots ratios than DAL - how do they stay in business?

Still learning all this, but we get deadhead credit? In what ways can you utilize your deadhead credit here?

However at the time it was open, it had a similar sized 737 pilot group than other bases like SEA, SLC and LAX. It was justified simply because there was so much 737 flying out of there that proximity to other bases was irrelevant. Closing the pilot base didn't really change that balance of flying at all anyway.
Pilot domiciles and strength of a fleet in a given city are somewhat correlated but aren't directly linked.
JB has robust pilot bases in both JFK and BOS, and in both FLL and MCO. Proximity to other bases means nothing for pilot domiciles compared to the actual network.

- Reserve coverage, more bases, more reserves.
- Unlocking of seat locks.
- Moving costs.
- Displacement costs if the base fails.
- Admin costs are probably minimal, but do count.

Next layover, turn on the TV and look at the folio/account balance from the menu screen. Often times you can see our negotiated rate. It’s less than $300.

In the end most of what is posted here is down in the noise as a factor in opening a base. It comes down to will the new base decrease credit hours over the course of an entire year. If opening a base reduces credit it’s likely to happen.

Given that they are negotiating hundreds of thousands, if not a few million room-nights per year, I'm betting $70-$80 per night might be realistic. But that's just a WAG.
