For those who've been here longer than I have, is this likely to increase the total number of 330 positions or will they just shrink other 330 bases to staff the new category?

Maybe a little of both? There are so many vaiables, it's really tough to predict. We have about a dozen 330's on order, so probably more growth than anything. But they may also not backfill some departures from some other bases, and let them draw down naturally. I wouldn't think there would be a dramatic shift in positions from NY, and I'd be really suprosed to see any dispacements - at least in the near term.

Like Fangs said, it's a bit of both. Right now, the BOS to Europe departuers on the 330 are spread between the bases using six day trip (JFK-ATH-BOS-CDG-JFK, or DTW-AMS-BOS-AMS-DTW) so that flying will reduce the demand in all the other bases.

My take is rather than grow the other bases to cover the upcoming deliveries, they'll just move that time to BOS and the existing bases will stay stagnant in positions or shrink thru attirition (DTW, I'm looking at you). Naturally, there will be pilot movement because commuters in the NE might switch to BOS rather than commute to JFK. Will a commuter from FL switch to BOS? Not likely. DCA commuter? Maybe.

There is no way dtw can shrink any futher - stay the same size maybe if bos gets some of that flying but its way short to begin

Looks like the highly requested reduced training footprint for Airbus transitions in same seat is about to start testing. This will be wonderful for those that want to take a break from WB flying or want to switch between the 330/350 as destinations change. Highly inefficient for a 330A to 320A to go thru IQ
