Default Payload Optimization, which planes?

So I have been payload optimized only a few times in my few years commuting, I never thought about it and ran to another flight, but in my current case, PVD-ATL, there are only a few flights a day. I am an offline jumpseater and got payload optimized on the way up (320) and ended up flying into Boston instead.

My question is that I have seen a few times where the older NW 320s are usually the ones that end up getting PO and this doesn't usually happen on 321s unless it is a longer route. Is this true? Are there any planes/routes that tend to get the PO treatment more than normal? I know it also can be a little random as well, but I would like to know for future reference if there are certain things that I shouldn't try and bank on getting a JS.

I think you will find optimized flights are more about the departure airport and the weather at both the departure and arrival airports than the type. High and hot departure or a need for a lot of alternate fuel or both can drive PO. If however it's a 757-200 don't sweat it, they don't care about the above issues!

It’s a MLW issue with the a320. When the wx is bad and they need an alternate, you can almost guarantee an A320 is going to be payload optimized.

I literally was PO’d on a 757-200 between ORD-ATL…

A very rare exception. An anecdote.

The 737-900 can get Payload optimized on long routes, sometimes shorter ones if there is a lot of bags and an alternate, and it's full. -800 it happens less frequently from what I've seen.

It's a max landing weight issue with the 320s. They added seats awhile back without an appreciable bump to the max landing weight. If an alternate is required it's pretty much guaranteed to be payload optimized.

Separately, the 321CEO struggles on the longer flights out of hot and high airports like LAS and DEN. The NEO is frequently payload optimized out of LIH if the winds aren't ideal or the runway is wet. But even the 757 took a hit out of there sometimes.

717 pilots be like…what’s payload optimization??

Actually, I was PO’d once on the 717. Our limit was 110 passengers and 2 jumpseaters… 🤷🏼‍♂️

220-100’s are often PO on longer legs with an alternate. Even NY to Jacksonville is often PO esp this time of year.

The deal is local load control gives out a body count based on their planning and won’t budge unless the CA gets involved. Then you gotta hit up dispatch and Mecca load control to make it work out to get anyone extra on board once they have a handle on gate checked bags, and maybe even have them adjust the fuel load. Lots of ways to make it work so we won’t land heavy, but not everyone has the bandwidth or motivation to push the rope. So it just depends on who’s working that day and how proactive they are.

I don't believe you. Of my many many years on the 7ER fleet, never was payload optimized in the 75. Perhaps they had an MEL? But I really, again, don't believe you. Were you on a DAL 757 or some other?

We'd take off from SAN do a transcon with a distant alt and never be PO'd. So I find it hard to believe you when you say you were optimized from ORD to ATL (unless there was an MEL restriction).
