Umm what? I can use the yoke switch to transmit over the radio when I'm latched into hot mic on the com panel.

I used the ship set for all of one trip when I was a new hire. Garbage.

Do yourself a favor and buy some Bose Proflight 2s and get some custom molded ear pieces from Avery Sound. You're a Delta pilot, you can afford it. They don't take up a lot of bag space.

Ship sets are so bad. It blows my mind that so many captains just use the ship sets. Spend the money and buy yourself a Bose Proflight, it make the job so much more pleasant.

Personally, I tried the Avery custom molds and went back to the stock ear pieces, they actually seal the sound out better for me.

Long story why, but both the FO and I had to fly several legs with the ship set, immediately followed by a couple legs with Bose's on a 321 ('relatively' quiet). Holy cow, what a massive difference. The other pilot was much easier to hear with the Bose mic, no pop with every other breath into the ship set, etc. And the difference in how quiet the cockpiit was with the Bose was unmistakable. I could easily and clearly hear ATC (and the other pilot), but with the ship set I had to turn volumes waaaay up and still had trouble making out the radios.

You are about to enter a multi-million dollar career. Spend the $1000 bucks. It's worth every penny, IMO. And I guarantee your fellow pilots will appreciate it, especially if that fleet is using more and more hot-mic. FWIW, on the 320 fleet, literally almost no FO's use the ship set.
This can't be emphasized enough. ANR should be required. I wish it was around (and the norm) when I started. I didn't make the switch until in my 40s and will probably regret it. Also learn how to use a hot mic and heavy breather etiquitte.

I've enjoyed my Telex Airman-8's on the 717 and now Bus..Its not Bose ANR, but it's enough and I don't like having to keep up with carrying batteries around with me.....I tried the Bose PF's once, felt too delicate with all the dangly bits.

FWIW, I found the PF2's are actually pretty durable. I found the 'dangly bits' can withstand quite a bit of tugging, and it's nice to have the hook to hold one ear 'up' for ground ops (I didn't like the tap "pass through", because every time i touched the ear piece, it would cycle on or off).

I'll add one other thing, then shut up. Crew Outfitters has a 30-day no-questions-asked money back guarantee. Be responsible, but give the Bose PF 2's a try (or another you are considering - I HATE on-ear headsets); take them back if you can't get used to them for a full refund.

Yeah the durability of them is fine, I've had my set since they were released with only one issue that they fixed by sending me the newer version down cable. The pass through sucks, I disabled it after trying it once and never used it again.

Bose also has a 30 day money back guarantee if you buy directly.

It's not that crazy, they're readily available, and they work just fine. Just clean them with a sani-com type cloth before using and they're likely more clean than any one of the many things we touch daily that are insanely dirty. It's not about the money, I own 4 sets of aviation headsets, including a set of Bose A20s, but they stay with the plane. Now that we're starting to get hot mic capability, I can see the utility in getting a set. I just want something that is super compact and packs nicely. I'd consider the Clarity Aloft Flex set, they look like they may fit the bill. If anyone has experience, I'd love to hear it.

I use an A20 but I never use the carrying case. I just rawdog my headset in the cockpit bag (that small LW stealth flight cube) but it sits on top of my emergency pair of underwear/white undershirt which acts as a cushion so it's not getting banged on the ground when I set the bag down. It barely takes any room too. That Bose case is too bulky in my opinion.
