A dividend increase is an excellent idea if you want to push up the share price and increase the value of Delta stock options. I wonder who has lots of options at Delta?

Double edged sword. If they subsequently back down the dividend there will be a stock price cost. For an industry leader that wants to show consistent ROI, that's not a whim decision. Generally ratcheting the bar up has less impact than ratcheting the bar down, or eliminating the dividend. They have to be confident profitability will continue. A 1-3 year delay on a major component cost increase from a supplier under contract would mean a benefit of fixed costs until the next guy with options is selected. Welcome to sect 6. negotiations, "that's an outrageous ask!" Oh, you didn't submit it yet? Same answer.

Don’t you usually see a dip in the stock price after the dividend is paid out?

As someone who loves dividends, you can see a quick “sell” at a lower price after the ex date, but in reality, many of the dividend stocks and ETFs rise at a rate that beat many of the indexes. So, unless you are worried about a very short drop in price, it doesn’t really affect the long term investor.
