You’ve been here long enough to understand this management team’s philosophy toward pilot basing. If a pilot base isn’t an absolute, overdue necessity (it won’t be), then a base won’t exist. If Flight Ops can’t get a firm commitment from Network to focus a specific fleet in AUS (they won’t), then a base won’t exist. If there’s any significant hiccup in the economy and/or industry (there will be), then a base (or even a hub) won’t exist.
We were talking about AUS, not BOS. I stated that there won't be a pilot base there until the new terminal is built and we see what our gates assigned are. We are working on upping util rate in AUS as that's how they assign gates there. That's part of the reason you all on the NB fleets will see more connections running thru AUS in the future.

Will BOS get a NB based before? Maybe, maybe not. But if you don't think this air line isn't gunning for a large presence in AUS you'd be wrong. There's big plans for AUS coming down the road 5-7 years out

I didn’t say that at all. I simply said that a large presence in any city, at Delta, does not equal a pilot base.

I was talking about AUS as well — using BOS as an example of how large-scale NB operations do not always equate to a pilot base here. An AUS base would require completely new Flight Ops management as well as a change in basing philosophy. Rippin’s prognostications require dozens of factors to fall into place perfectly. AUS 320/220/73N is a pipe dream at best.

Get out of here with that 73N I think a BOS NB base will come before AUS. I also think the lack of a BOS NB is the exception not the rule. The rule is a pilot base is followed by growth and/or hub designation.

Dozens of things do have to fall into place, 100%. But, they have 4-5 years to fall into place since Terminal B isn’t here yet. In the meantime I think we can agree Delta will continue to incrementally grow and up-gauge as the new lease agreement allows which should be revealed sometime this month or next month. I’d be surprised if Delta receives no net gain in gates as the airport stands to support ABIA over the next 4-5 years. Southwest will get a base first and keep every form of a lead until B grows to 30-40 gates to shake thing up.

It said not likely, not “no AUS”. And, only for the near future. It’ll come with the new terminal.

The financial metrics for AUS growth are very promising and it's a piece we want to grab. AUS is positioned differtly than BOS. Theres JFK LGA and EWR just down the road. Same reason you won't see a FL base. Proximity of the ATL despite the fact we lead in TPA MCO.

AUS is a different animal altogether really. Like I said, really big plans there in the next decade. BOS NB base? Again maybe maybe not.

Which is, what, 4+ years away? Them “confirm[ing]” that AUS is off the table anytime soon is meaningful.

But they also hinted strongly at new fleets (plural) at existing bases (plural). Which I think we all expect, but still good to see in writing. BOS 320 and SLC 330/350 is a lot of people’s guess.
