If you have a bit of money, I hear there are some wonderful areas due north of LAX.

I actually agree with Hub’s posting. Not a common occurrence.

Long Beach, Seal Beach, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport. All nice, hour plus perhaps 2 hrs with heavy traffic but it’s not like you’re driving to LAX everyday

Was wondering if this area is ok, seems to be some decent options around. Will need be around the hockey rink next door in El Segundo almost every day, but I’m coming to accept a lot of time in the car is inevitable (my 35 min drive in ATL can turn into 1.5 hours, so have been trained well).

SoCal is a great place to live and I spent a good part of my life there and still have relatives in the area. Lots of good suggestions already in this thread. I would however caution you to take a really deep dive into the actual costs to live there. Gas at the moment is surging over 7 dollars a gallon in some areas and with current mandates many predict over 10 within 5 years. Electricity is a stunning 47 cents a KW. All utilities are very high and only going higher as the infrastructure needs massive cash infusions. Since they can’t raise property taxes on existing homes unless they are sold the state is coming up with creative ways to raise money from your house outside of property tax even though you will pay very high tax rates on a new purchase. A high percentage of cars are unregistered and uninsured so make sure your coverage is well above minimums and with a rock solid company. You will need to pay an import fee on all vehicles. Police can no longer enforce registration and insurance laws because it’s discriminatory. Everyone has a right to drive! God forbid you go on vacation and come back and find someone living in your house. You will be entering a legal nightmare! The weather is however amazing and I do miss the good things when I go back. Craving the Clam chowder at the Crab Cooker in Newport as I type this!

Outside of very very northern CA there is a reason everyone is leaving CA.

If you like taxes and bums, get caught with a 11 round mag or a good exhaust system on your diesel and the state will destroy your life, someone breaks into your home and steals your stuff “that’s a civil matter sir”.

I’d avoid that state

That said beautiful country side, women, and the food is some of the best.
