Delta Culture Needs Work
#41
OUTSIDE ATL, I often see one person handling the boarding and one doing administrative tasks next to them. Hell, even in LGA at 7am there was at least two gate agents on my last flight.

The fact that these are the elements in a "Delta needs culture change" conversation is mind blowing to me. If every one of these things changed tonight, not one bit of the "culture" at Delta would move an ounce to the good side.

It's the weekend. Let's unpin a grenade for the fun of it.
How hard is it (domestically) to remember someone's last name and a 6 digit employee number for a 3-4 day trip anyway?
(Impossible, apparently. And we read back instructions for a living. Heck, you can just make up the employee number. So we're really talking about remembering a last name.)

I will literally never commit another person's employee number to memory. Ever. It's a complete waste of time and effort. Just like I refuse to memorize the ATL ramp frequencies. If you want to be super man and do that? Go right ahead. Also, there's a 1/3 chance I don't even remember the guy I'm flying with's first name after day 2, let alone his last.

Here's my grenade:
I do agree it needs work, especially flight ops. It's definitely a little too stuffy around here. We're the only company with mandatory hats for crying out loud. Too many guys can't comprehend the idea that you don't have to be straight and white to fly jets. It's not all bad, but we earned the stereotype we have. Delta does not have an industry reputation for laid back friendliness. But I wish it did. So I do my part to be the change I wanna see.

The biggest culture issue here is the relationship between management and us. It is horrendous and getting worse by the memo. Of course management’s disdain for us is filtering down through the other work groups, so we have that to enjoy. The good news is 5 mins of “can you believe the last cheap shot from the 4th floor” is enough to unify just about any flight deck crew. So if you fly with me: sign the book if you get there first (or I will if I do), I’ll get your walks and beers, and let’s fly the contract and hope things get better around here.
