Default Short Call Question

I'm doing reserve for November for the first time in many years. I live in base. I'm domestic. I'm interested in flying as little as possible. I have weekends and the holiday off.

For those of you who have been on reserve, it is better to request to sit short call early or later? Or, does it just not matter and it's all a crap shoot?

Any advice would be appreciated.

It depends...so many variables. Generally, I'll put in preferred SC start times and let it ride. If reserve coverage is low and I'm sure I'll be on SC, I'll request to be first in line with the times I want.

Then once I get 2 SCs, if it's earlier in the month, I'll volunteer for a 3rd just to get into the next SC bucket.

I also call two hours prior to the end of my short call to get released.

There is no hard-and-fast strategy, because there are just too many unknowns. So I generally sit on my hands until they get to me.

IMHO It is pretty much a crap shoot on short call start times if you don't commute.

As Purple said, there are just too many unknowns/variables to when trips come open for coverage due to: sick calls, maintenance delays, equipment swaps, weather, etc. etc. Too many variables.

If you have an early am start (4-6) you can get nabbed for stuff that came open later the previous night that they could not assign to a long call, or some other early morning snafu that can't be covered any other way. On the flip side, if you are on a late start you are legal to go late into the night duty time-wise when other's (who may be ahead of you on the list for callout) may not be legal due to their early am start.

One potential is to just decide what fits best with your home schedule on a given day and/or whether you are an early morning or night kinda person. The situation the day prior, like a weather event, could also make a certain time slightly better. Who knows.

I've been mostly on reserve for the better part of 6 years. Based on my experience, I would say APCLurker's gouge is spot on.

Spot on. I really don't like early mornings, so I always go for noon short call. Nothing I hate worse than going on SC at 0600 and the phone ringing at 0601 for a "get there as soon as you can" callout. I also don't mind flying all night. The all night thing others despise as much as I hate mornings, so it's really personal preference.

Both Delta Air Lines and ALPA have done everything you would expect and more. I feel like I have three support groups, my family, my Delta family, and my ALPA family and they all have kept me able to get up in the morning.

One of the hardest moments was the juxtaposition of cost and value. She just bought a house 4 months ago and while she was saving up for it she was driving my old car. Since she was a little messy, I was cleaning up her car before giving it to charity. I found this old sweater that she wore just about every day. I can picture her now wearing that sweater at the front door (it is glass) stopping over after work. It was from Old Navy and probably cost $25 brand new and was now worth about $1.50 at a yard sale.

So I have a car still worth thousands, despite it's age, and a sweater with no monetary worth at all. Guess which one I am giving away and which one I will have until the day I die.

The bottom line is I am shaky. Most people that have worked with me know that the tougher things got the tougher and meaner I got. Now I just feel off balance and trying to get my feet back. You could do or say anything to me and it just rolls off my back, but my daughter, that has knocked me like nothing else.

I hope this doesn't drag people down, but sometimes writing things down makes me feel better.
No words Alpha can come from any of us to make a difference at a time like this, but just know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Very happy to hear ALPA and the company have come through to this point. God bless you and your family!

Alpha:

I'm so very sorry for the loss of your little girl. I pray God will comfort you and your family, help you find the strength to carry on, and that He will welcome her to His side.

Not really interested in airline miles for obvious reasons, so any other type of rewards card is fair game.
Thanks in advance for the help and insight!

Sinca,
If you are past military at all, for straight up cash back it's hard to beat Navy Federal Credit Union Visa, you get 1.5% back all the time. If you use it a lot that's $15 for every $1000 spent. I cash it in every couple of years for a nice $1500 check but I use it for almost everything I can and then just pay one bill a month.
They do have other ways to spend your "points" but I always just take the cash.

I apparently forgot to respond to alfa earlier:

Thanks for updating us. Much good advice has been given. You and your family continue to be in my prayers... please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything.
