Flown with tools from both sides, civ. vs. mil. No one side has that dept. locked up. However, at DL, the tools are minimized due to our hiring dept. They generally do a great job weeding through the PIA types. However, whenever I have a sideways looking moment with the guy/gal I'm flying with, he/she most often flew equipment which had a large crew in the military or came from a school that rhymes with fiddle. If they've done both, OMG!! :D

Goes something like this:

Air Force: "We can't do that, it's not in the book."
Navy: "We can do that, it's not in the book."
Marines: "Huh?....What Book?"
Civilian: "Dude,...For Real?!?,...screw the book!!

So says the stereotypes, which usually hold only a morsel of truth to them. I added the civilian part! Heard the branches description before many times.

Best of luck to all the guys interviewing soon. If you read our boards, we sound like a bunch of whiners, but it truly is the best airline to work for from top to bottom. The guys you share the cockpit are top notch. We are all looking forward to welcoming good people/pilots aboard, mil or civ! :)

Oh, and it's "hence," not "hince." Carry on.

I've flown with lots of military pilots. They've all been great. I enjoy their stories. They probably get tired of all of my questions but I love hearing about it. If they've ever felt I wasn't deserving of my position they haven't mentioned it or even hinted at it.

I'm with Buzz. Everyone needs to lighten up and enjoy the great people we are lucky to work with no matter their background.

Way too much bandwidth wasted on the mil/civ non-issue.
There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

Back to the Delta hiring topic:

What do you guys think?
Can someone get the job if they have a wrist tattoo?

If the cleavage is good enough...

What wrist tattoo?

What if you wear a dress instead of the blue suit and red tie to the interview?
Would that be a bad thing?

Just so you're prepared.

Air Force guys are awesome.

Navy guys are weird.

Marines? Never mind.

Hope to welcome you on campus soon if you're not already here!

I was an Air Force guy who would have been a better fit in the Marines. I think Navy guys are usually a blast.

Bring on the fresh meat.

I came to this thread to see what talk there was about Delta hiring coming up. What did I find? A cat fight about mil vs civ. If I were putting in an app and read the last four pages here I'd be left wondering what I might be getting myself into.

Circle gets the square! Every time Delta starts to hire, this little gem MvC, get dusted off and a whole new group goes round and round. All I can think is that somehow, it is a byproduct of the desire to be hired by Delta. Everyone wants to believe that they have the best chance and anything said that encroaches on that bubble, will be vigorously fought off.

Simple fact of the matter, both military trained and civilian trained pilots are more than qualified to work here. While each group has certain skill sets that the other group does not, it doesn't matter. Both add to the mix. Civilian guys may find the training easier because they have been through AQP and line flying. Military guys may handle IROPS and one offs easier due to the non regular type of flying they did. Put them together and you get the type of pilot Delta wants. Over time, each pilot ends up a conglomeration of both.

Not trying to be preachy, but ya'll have got to relax. There is going to be plenty of openings in the coming YEARS for anyone who wants to work at Delta. The key to it has been stated repeatedly. Just don't be "That Guy."

In our new hire class in 2010, we had about 1/2 military and 1/2 civilian. On the day I was hired, there were 12 interviewees, 5 military and 7 civilian. All 5 military were hired and 2 of the civilian pilots were hired. It might be more difficult for civilian guys to get hired at Delta, but with military pilots becoming fewer in availability, it really won't matter anyway. Delta can choose to hire who it wants to...at my interview I had an active captain (prior military), retired captain (straight civilian) and an HR person. It's a great job and I get to work with great people.
