Make sure you put taps on them, click on into the kitchen with a little "soft shoe", that should send her out amongst the squirrels.:D

I found a room in a nice house/small crashpad owned by a 765 FO and enjoyed being able to cook healthy meals, kill some Sweetwaters with the roommates, walk in a neighborhood I didn't have to worry about getting shanked, etc. And yeah, saved about $1400 to boot. There are some good alternatives out there, just ask around, especially among the people 3-4 weeks ahead of you.

FYI: You can still come to the training hotel for free beer & wings on Weds nights!

Where is this terrible neighborhood everyone keeps talking about? I've walked or ran in the neighborhoods surrounding the Holiday Inn and they are all pretty nice. The area surrounding the Woodward Academy is much nicer than anyplace I've ever lived.

Not trying to bust your balls Jungle, just trying to shed some light on the situation. From what I was told before I got to training I expected a war zone.

Disclaimer: I visit Detroit on a regular basis for fun so my perspective might be a little off. :-D

I'm a runner, and trust me, a couple decades ago when I first started, you didn't go running back in the neighborhood around Woodward. Over the years the school has a done a good job of buying up all the distressed properties and gentrifying the area and now I have no problem running back there.

Virginia Ave isn't a war zone, but there have been a number of Pilots held up or had items stolen at the various training hotels. I wouldn't go wandering around off the beaten path at night and I'd keep a close eye on my valuables.

I would always go running by the training center then down past air cargo... daytime only, of course. That seemed quite safe as well... plus plenty of airplane watching to distract me from my huffing and puffing.

Hotel

Keep in mind that you can positive space home about three times during your training, so you're really only doing 5 nights a week in a hotel if you do that. If you come from out west like I do, and don't plan on driving, then a hotel makes sense to me. I don't want to walk miles to a crash pad, so five days in a hotel with a fridge is the path I'm going down.

For the 320 most of us have 5 days on, 2 off x 4 so 20 days of training. Some of the other acft do not get the 2 days off in a row so it does vary depending on how the training pipeline is flowing.

One thing to keep in mind if you go the hotel route. Make your hotel reservations as far in advance as you can. There are times when rooms get hard to get. NASCAR race and various weird downtown events come to mind.
