The 737 is loud. I flew it for 2 years and used the ship sets and ear plugs. Worked fine, but if I got back to it, I'll probably buy a nice headset. I'd say as a new guy, it won't hurt to have one, but you can certainly get by without.

MoonShot is right. It is loud. But, I think the idea is still sound. No need to rush out and dump a bunch of money on an expensive item you'll have for a long time, without doing some leg work.

Lucky stiffs! That would solve over half of my commute problem right there! Can't wait until I get there!
Break // Break.... Guys, thx a bunch for your input. Were the earplugs you used the standard yellow foamies in the curved cardboard containers used by the military? I'll try plugs / company headset for now but would like to get something nicer (been told Bose noise cancelling?) when I have time to research it. Thx to the Tweet I already have a constant reminder ringing in my ears of that underpowered sports car. Don't really want another tone to remind of Fluffy. |

The problem with the noise cancelling headsets is we don't have an intercom so you will probably move one earphone off your ear so you can hear your Captain/FO, thus negating half the benefit of the headset so I wouldn't be dropping $1000 on a Bose headset. On my last trip, the Captain had just bought a fancy, wireless, noise cancelling headset. The thing was monstrous, and he was trying to find a place on his head, other than his right ear, to put the inboard ear cup. I decided then and there, until Delta equips my fleet with an intercom system, I'll stick with my telex 850 and if the airplane I'm on is really noisy, I'll put an earplug in my exposed ear. Just my 2 cents |

Just my 2 cents I am a year 1 guy, so I use the free headset with an earplug in my headset ear, and a loose one in my "Captain" ear. It's not crazy loud, but some phases of flight are worse than others. Add a lot of "senior" pilots (great guys, though, and I hope to live that long), and you end up with some loud conversations... |
The Telex 850s work great in the 737. Once the speed is below 300 kts the noise on the exposed ear isn't too bad.
The newest 900s have hot mic and it works great. Very quiet flight deck with hot mic, 850s, and 900 nose vortex generators. Hot mic retrofit for older planes being researched Another option on standard audio panels if the Captain is game is the rubber band trick to hold intercom switch active. Besides 850s I've heard good things about the DC Pro X headset. Has Bluetooth audio for listening to music on your deadheads..... Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk |
All the 737s are getting modified for hot mic.... and finally a secondary flight plan! Welcome to the 1980's! ;)
Sorry, your overhead panel, systems management and ergonomics are still back in the 60's, though. |
