Hello New poolie question here. I start Indoc in a couple of weeks and am expecting NYC.

Can anyone help with a basic guideline of which would be better to maximize time with my family in S. Texas…...NYC or ATL? Unfortunately it will be a two leg commute either one until my oldest graduates from HS. Should I go for ATL (MD/717 if available) or NYC if I want to maximize time at home? I probably won't have a choice but if I do, is closer better or is ATL so senior that NYC offers more chance to get home?

It could be a long two years of commuting, but I am excited to start!! Thx in advance

I'm not at the big D but can tell you New York is expensive! That means everything from Pizza to beer to trains and cabs. ATL is by far cheaper is a bigger hub and has SWA to texas. You can hold Captain in Gotham city quicker, 1 to 2 years buy you'll be on reserve for ever I would think.

Bid L1011 FE in ATL, guys on R don't fly much and when you do its usually a HNL trip or PBI turn. You can then bid 727 right seat or DC-9 in six months.

Good luck and congrats on the big D. I've only been applying since 1978.

Well, the first piece of advice would be to get the heck out of Corpus Christi if that's where you leaving the Navy from and if you're committed to living in Texas. San Antonio and Austin have at least one direct flight to NYC.

Commuting to ATL to actually harder a lot of the time as everyone you know in the world is trying to get to work there. Commutes home from there frequently devolve into frantic counting of HKs on the airport standby list and rapidly calculating which of the 15 employees trying to get on is going to use the nuclear S2 option first. Jumpseat? Yeah...that was booked at 1200:01 3.5 days ago.

At any rate, welcome to the fray. I prefer NYC so for for seniority but several classmates work through the Atlanta jungle daily. you can't really go wrong.

I was based in NYC for 20 years, and drove. Not now, been commuting for almost 10, to just about every base we have.

DFW still has a lot of refugees commuting to everywhere. Tough I've heard, I presume you're going through DFW. With all the hiring, I think NYC might have a shortage of good crash pads, look into it. It's easier to get to EWR via public transit now. Getting out of EWR at midnight might be an adventure. Are you planning on being an FFDO, TIC.

Get to MECCA. Cheaper. Easier.
