There are lots of advantages of doing an inverse assignment instead of a GS.

If an inverse shows up that you want to fly, call and see if it's still available. If you end up flying it, you won't have used up GS#1 for the month yet since that's in it's own category.

Not that there is a limit to the number of GS in a month, but recall that a GS goes down the list in seniority order and if people have flown GS#2, GS#4, etc. already themselves, then if a GS that meets your preferences pops up, it will be offered to you before someone gets it as their second greenslip of the month.

What is even better than both right now on the 717 is a greenslip with conflict. Those are the "C" you see in the daily trip coverage page.

What you want to do is pickup a 2-day conflict that bumps your 4-day of f your schedule, with pay. Or pickup a 3-day that touches a 5-day. Or pickup a 4-day that touches a 5-day. etc. You want the trip being picked up to be shorter than the original one you had, or at least, the same length...because they both pay regular pay. A good deal, but only if you do it right. Picking up a 5-day that conflicts with your 2-day trip would not be a great deal...you'd be working for regular pay for three extra days and losing days off.

 

If you are a commuter, there are many scenarios where it works to your advantage to YS a trip on your last X day before starting a stretch of reserve. To imply and assume that such a move is a losing hand is ignorant and short sighted.

 

That is not correct.

A yellow slip on an X day goes towards guarantee.

i.e. you have a reserve line with all of your X days in the front half and your reserve days in the back half of a month.

A 12-day trip shows up on the 2nd of the month worth 75 hrs. Yellow slip, trip awarded.

"FULL."

Entirely flown on X days.

One you left out, that may be important in an otherwise skinny month: IA pays double without regard to any "trigger"; a GS only pays double for that portion where one's credit is above the trigger.

To the OP, that's one of the more important practical differences between credit/no credit, btw--if you're GS'ing, make sure you know how much credit you have, otherwise you may not be getting paid what you think you're getting paid....
