If you list and coach is full and first class doesn't have anyone in it, you will not go. In no way will you or can you get upgraded on Air France. Unless of course the crew upgrades you onboard.

From: 7ER B...whatever that means.
Unless by non-rev the OP means ZED/ID90. That said, it is almost unheard of for ZED/ID90s to be upgraded beyond Economy Comfort or whatever other airlines call their "premium economy" product so I guess the answer would still be no.

The 2 flights out of lax to cdg were going out wide open the last couple of months and the CS agents were routinely clearing all NonRev/ZEDs into business and first. Definitely not a system wide occurrence but I thought Id mention it.

In summer 2014 I used AF to fly throughout Europe on 8 legs. Now given it was Intra-European flying, but:
I was upgrade to FC 5 legs, BC on the other 3. The gate agent always assigned me the seat in BC, the 5 FC upgrades always came from the FAs on board. The FC was just the first row on the A320s and BC was the next 2 rows, so I'm not really sure what the big difference was. All flights were on A320s 1.5-2 hrs long.
Also a strike threatened to overbook a flight once, so the gate agent asked the CA and I got approval for the J/S
Of course when it came time to push, there just happened to be a seat in FC, so I took that
. Things have certainly escalated security-wise in Europe the last few years so don't expect that, but also don't give up on it and don't forget to dress at least half decent when you're doing it!

(However I am regularly updating on airlineapps, DL hopeful) We non-rev to Europe fairly frequently. This time I'm coming back from the 24 hour Le Mans race with my son and AF has a convenient afternoon flight. But coach crossing the pond sucks.
BTW, We always dress nicely... Been doing this since coat and tie was required!

On a related note, and just sharing my experience as best I could tell how the gate agents handled the flight we took back from CDG - JFK a couple of years ago:
The Delta flight had enough BC seats available that I thought my family and I would all get BC. It appeared the gate agents put coach fare revenue passengers up in BC, and the non-revs got coach. I'm not sure if this is the experience others have had, or if it was a one off. I would have engaged the gate agents, but at that point I was happy to just be getting all of us on the same flight home and the French laddies had an air of disgust for all things American about them.
