Default Duty day and rest

How long of a duty day can you work? What's the min required rest? What kind of duty days and overnights does the 717 and MD88 get?

I know it's hard to generalize, but I just was curious about the overall QOL on those two fleets, especially out of NYC.

Thanks!

There's a chart for that. It depends on what time you sign in, how many legs you fly, how much rest you've had prior, how much rest you'll get tonight, what you had for lunch, if you had a lunch, what type of rest facility you didn't get, how many crew members are there, what does your A line look like, and lots of other stuff too convoluted to remember off the top of anyone's head.

Gotta love FAR117, the solution to a crew rest problem was...

Fly 9 hours a day instead of 8!

As for the overall quality of life that varies GREATLY depending on your seniority. Duty days and overnights also vary greatly depending on your seniority..It's like comparing apples to oranges.

The 717 is an 88 that was built the way the DC9 should have been built originally. However you will be flying a paddle ball airplane in the 717. The plane is the ball and it is attached to its base (NY or ATL) by a rubber band and every time you leave the base that rubber band pulls you home. The 88 isn't much better but it does occasionally get to more than a hour away from base and then go someplace new like a different 88 base.

You will likely average 3 legs a day on the 88 and at least that many on the 717. Early starts and late releases in NY on both categories. At least that has been my experience on the 88 and what my buddies have said about the 717.

OP: Google up FAR117 crew duty charts. Here's just one of many:

Thanks everyone. I wasn't sure if the contract gave you better rest rules than 117.

And have a 16:30 duty day instead of 16 (thanks to stopping duty day at block in instead of 30 minutes after like it used to be).

Our company expects its pilots to fly to FAR maximums so expect to be among the least rested pilots there are.
