Ignoring the syntax of "subrogation" versus "abrogation" (which is what I think you were looking for) unstacking (now called Trip Coverage) actually ruthlessly honors seniority. It ensures that at some point the junior guys are going to get assigned flying on holidays, etc. It doesn't matter "if" you could have gotten a regular line anyway--the trips over the unstacked days must be covered. And NO ONE junior to you got a regular line over those unstacked days, who wasn't unstacked himself. If it is that important to get those days off, bid reserve (not always possible for commuters, I know). And if you still can't get those days off even with a reserve line--then what do you expect? Your are likely super-junior.

Think of it this way. Under line of time bidding, there were lots of lines that had trips that flew over holidays, right? That means that those lines were "unstacked in advance."

The threshold is merely a tool that crew resources uses to tweak the bid results so that the actual ALV (literally, the average of all the regular line bid awards) comes within +/- one hour of the published ALV. By definition, half the pilots' results come under the ALV within a 15 hour LCW, and half come over it. Even with an 84 hour ALV in the busiest summer month, half the pilots' bid results are a total less than 84.

Tell me about it! I am ATL 717A, and numerous times in the last year we have had more five day trips than 1,2, and 3 day trips combined! That has caused a lot of problems. Only in the past month or two has it gotten any better. I contacted the RCC, chief pilots office, wrote a blistering FCR, etc. I'm not sure how much it made a difference.

The thing I want to emphasize is that is a contractual thing--nothing to do with PBS. In fact one of my points in my FCR was that pre-merger, there was no such thing as a five day domestic trip at Delta-S. That was a Northwest thing that a lot of the NW guys liked--fair enough. But we should have more five-day trips--something that never even existed in domestic categories at PMDL--than 1, 2, and 3 day trips combined? So you know what I did? This summer I had vacation in two of the months. I used the PBS "min on call days" rule of 3 to my advantage. With the vacation factored in I was able to bid a reserve line where I was never on call for more than three days at a time. My philosophy was "if 90% of your trips are 4-day or longer, then I am bidding a reserve line where I am on call no more than three days at a time." (to be fair you can't do that if you don't have vacation).

No argument from me on that one!

That is mostly true in the summer. All I can say is, if you can get summer vacation, don't discount bidding reserve to get a better pattern of days off. I realize that may or may not be feasible for everyone.
