The Circus Comes To Atlanta
Well this is neat. The Council 44 reps are finally writing split letters to the membership. The rag is up on the MEC website.
I’ve gotta say that I don’t entirely agree with Sam and Scott patting themselves on the back so much. It almost looks like yoga. Still, they accomplished the exact thing they set out to do, which was to deliver a new Tentative Agreement that was accepted by a vast majority of the membership, so I will cut them some slack.
No one should be surprised, considering the history that these two share with John Malone; each of them has shown a formidable amount of mission focus in the last year, and gotten this union through several intervals where the outcome overwhelmingly desired by the membership would have been derailed by the very four men who will occupy our MEC in January.
The second half of the update, by comparison, is written almost entirely in a passive voice, as though Kern and Johnson bear no responsibility for their actions. “Strongest of consideration,” whatever THAT means, but the next part is the kicker:
“After the circus-like process and atmosphere of last year’s recalls around the system, the Delta MEC led the charge for changes to the recall process to avoid some of the ugliness and transition to electronic balloting and remove the paper proxy.”
There were many LEC recall votes in 2015. Over 400 pilots attended the Atlanta meeting, and the entire affair was carried out without a single hitch or contested vote, despite the emotional and tense atmosphere, and everyone who was there has agreed that Hermon Cook did a spectacular and professional job in presiding over it.
Council 66, on the other hand, held their meeting to recall Dave Marino in a busy restaurant with poor acoustics (as opposed to the usual meeting location, which was available), with Tom Brielmann’s cronies actually operating a printer within eyesight of the door. An alarming number of the proxies to recall Marino were illegal under the ALPA Constitution & By-Laws, and the potential for legal entanglement was so great that the entire matter had to be addressed at the National level.
Kern and Johnson now want to skip the resolution process and go directly to an electronic ballot, which is not allowed under ALPA governance. They say that they are doing this because of the “circus-like process and atmosphere” attributable solely to the miscarriage in Council 66. That circus happened on Tom Brielmann’s watch, and these two voted for him anyway.
This logical fallacy alone demonstrates that these two are unfit for office. You can’t talk about how horrible something is, say that you want to avoid it at all costs, and then promote the clown who instigated the horrible thing. Do I need to draw a picture for anyone?
They aren’t getting recalled for their lack of reason. The MEC officer election was just the last straw for these two, who should have been recalled after they sided with the Dirty Dozen on August 7th. Scott Martin urged the members of Council 44 to “let it go,” and look where that admonition has brought us. Kern saw which way the wind was blowing, and though he opposed re-direction in September, he eventually decided to save his hide by supporting the TA. Johnson has opposed everything that has come down the pike, and has even told the MEC that he was “elected to say no,” which is stupid and short sighted, even for someone whose written endorsements are still visible on the DPA website.
What they have done is much worse than anything we could have envisioned a year ago.
For the first time, we have a Master Chairman who cast a deciding vote for himself as a status rep. In the past, Delta pilots have operated under a gentleman’s agreement that a rep would resign his position prior to announcing his candidacy for higher office, to mitigate any unfair advantage such a candidate might have over any opponents.
The next slate will have FOUR men who voted for themselves and each other, it could even be considered five if you count Chris Hazleton, who supported the four and now finds himself with a full time FPL gig as “Transition Coordinator.” There is nothing in the record books that will ever compare to this level of conniving self-interest, and I am eager to see how Kern and Johnson will ever defend this conspiracy.
I think that it’s finally dawning on these two that they had no idea what they were getting into when they put their names in the hat, and now they’re either just trying to avoid an angry mob at the next LEC meeting, or they are hoping that their buddies on the DPA email list will bail them out again.
I have some advice for Kern and Johnson. If you really want to bypass the paper ballot, there’s only one thing you can do.
Resign.
Take your hurt feelings elsewhere and brood about them, and this council can elect two reps that are actually willing to represent their pilots at the horsehoe and face the music with the membership.

So the new crew won perfectly within the governing boundaries of the process, but because they didn't follow the gentleman's agreement you want them to, it's a major foul?
Chris and JJ's being put up for recall is nothing but sour grapes from Curly and a couple others such as yourself. That's it. Graceful it is not.

This is nothing but whining. The reps have offered to not oppose recall. Done.
As for the gentleman's agreement, who are the gentlemen and when did they agree? If this is anything, it's original DALPA tradition. Those traditions are not binding and not familiar to the majority of this pilot group and have no place in the current DALPA. We now have over 3000 pilots hired since the merger and 5500 or more from NWA ALPA. If it's not in the policy manual, ITS NOT IN THE POLICY MANUAL.
As for gentleman's agreements wasn't it a gentleman's agreement that C44 with their 4 reps would honor a senatorial vote and not use the trumping power of their right to a roll call vote? How long did that last?
Wow, you just can't get past this stuff, can you?
