If the TA passes, maybe that guy will have enough money to tip... or work through good anger issues with a good therapist.

If it doesn't pass, no tipping or well adjusted pilots.

I'd sure like to hear more about the proposed NY co-base. That seems to be the single biggest change besides the pay rates. Certainly more important to me than arguing over a $1 tip. How will this affect commuters? Or heaven forbid, reserve commuters? Has transport between the two airports been historically efficient?

It sounds like reserves will likely be the most impacted by the co-domicle.

It's probably not going to be awesome for reserves.

As for transportation, I'm not New York based but I'm aware of some of the options.

There's the shuttle contracted by the company that goes between the airports and stops at kew gardens, you can get the schedule off the intranet but I think it's essentially every 2 hours-ish.

Other than that, there's lyft, uber, kew cab etc etc. I think there's also a way to use the air train to connect to the subway but I'm a little dicey on that.

That said, if you start a trip in one airport the company will return you to that airport, so you still get the ground deadhead we get now and if you're a commuter they'll still allow the alternate deadhead home in lieu of the ground deadhead.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge of NYC can chime in.

New commuter clause will help. Positive space on second flight. You can bid to start trips at either airport. Trips start and end at same airport or you get a limo. If you pick up partial trip that ends at a different airport you can also get a limo.

Transport between the airports is there but its lousy. They need to improve it with a corporate lyft or uber account or something better than a shuttle that runs too infrequently.

Do you tip the workers at Home Depot? Do you tip the shelf stockers at Wal Mart? What about the lady behind the counter at 7-11? Do you tip the butcher for slicing your meat for you so you don’t have to? What about the guy who stands by the velvet ropes to do the rough job of ripping your movie tickets in half so you can watch the movie without feeling so tired? Have you tipped your drive-thru ATC controller lately as you pay for your food?

They are all jobs that pay less than yours (presumably). If you’re tipping van drivers and not them, then you are a hypocrite. Tips are not part of a van drivers wages like they are for wait staff and such. They earn a paycheck just like everyone else. (Do you tip your FOs after they do the walk around for you? They make a LOT less than you do too.)

You can treat people as decent humans with or without tipping them. That being said, I tip on the rare occasion that someone goes out of their way for me. Like the van driver who saw me about to walk across a busy highway to the store across the street, who insisted I let him take me over. I offered to buy him a drink or snack for his generosity, but he refused, said it was just part of his job that he gets paid well for. So I slipped him a tip. Job well done.

If you wish to give away your money just because someone makes less than you, so be it. But that doesn’t give you the moral superiority to chastise others for not doing the same.

Everyone, whether they’re fairly entitled to it or not, is a recipient of subsidies. Ever purchased gasoline? Ethanol subsidy! Purchased any food item at the grocery store? Food subsidy! Deducted health insurance premiums or mortgage interest from your taxable income? The government is subsidizing your healthcare and house!

God, there is something so screwed up about people who all are making well above the median per capita income in this country, many who make in the six figures, stiffing a van driver over $1. I just don’t get it.

You have seemed like a dbag for a long time on here, this comment cements your status as far as I'm concerned.

Still enough to tell him that you’ll meet him outside for the hotel van vs waiting.

I agree with HighFlight on this. You can't just tip because they drove you there. If they're at the curb when we pull up, help with our bags, etc. I'll give them a $1 or $2. But just to tip them for the sake of tipping them because they make less money is BS. If we tip them when they do good, they'll keep doing it for the next crew. If you don't tip them when they do bad, they'll eventually change..one would hope
