I think more and more people of the new gens just don’t carry cash, it’s not an excuse for not tipping though.

Sometimes I don't have singles, sometimes the service is crap or they won't load the bags (so I give myself the tip)...I try to ask if they can change a 5 (sometimes I only have a 20). There are a ton of reasons people do not tip, but my experience is that most folks do.

The tipping culture in our country is insane. Nowhere else in the world do workers expect tips for a job they are already being paid for. Tipping because it is expected is ridiculous.
that said, I will generally tip as long as driver is kind, courteous, and actually does something with my bags other than watch me put them in the van myself. Also, if they aren’t there when the hotel said they should be… nope. Everyone can access flightaware and see when flights are due in. If an already nearly min rest overnight gets shorter because of a slow van, definitely not getting a tip. |

It's 2023.
It's embarrassing seeing uniformed crew members who either don't tip, or who actually hand over a measily, stingy, paltry one dollar bill. It's embarrassing when uniformed crew members ask the van driver for change. "Here, I have this, but I only want to give you a little. Can you make change so I can give you the least possible? Can you break a five so I can give you a one?" Grow up. Tip the damn driver. Throw a hundred in fives in your bag and you'll always have a five to slip the driver. Go to Harbor Freight, buy a cheap screwdriver, and pry that wallet open. It may be painful, you'll live. |

My experience in Mexico is the wait staff at the restaurants and the drivers at the hotels taking the bag to the room all expect and get tips.

I suppose just mostly out of tradition at this point, I tip the van driver every time I have cash in my wallet, which is usually always. If for whatever reason I end up at the curb cashless, which does happen, i'll hit up my partner for a few singles. But to expect a person to precisely pre-arrange before a trip, or during their 4 leg day, to allocate just the perfect amount of tipping money is ridiculous. I could literally care less if my fellow crew members tip the driver. I do it, but that's just me. I don't even really want to but I do. And your suggestion of putting five hundred in fives in your bag, you don't possibly think that's a good idea. Sheesh. |
