Default Miami flying

Hey guys, first post.

I live in Miami and can’t move. Anyone have an idea on what the flying is like out of Miami base? I know it’s 145 only. Is it better to commute to LGA or ORD instead? I know commuting is a drag, just looking for opinions on which one is better for the long term.

Thanks!

You'll be able to hold MIA as an FO pretty easily. You'll most likely wind up commuting to ORD (LGA is circling the drain) for quite some time after upgrade before being able to hold it again.

Hub-to-hub commutes aren't that bad out of MIA, both ORD and LGA would be doable out of there.

I have no personal experience, so I can’t argue, but I’ve never heard anyone make this statement before. Only emphatically the opposite.

On the other hand, since demand has fallen off a cliff because of the Corona Virus, at least commuting should be easier. At least until we’re all on the street...

Last flowplan shows a June 2019 hire was awarded MFE (Miami, FO, EMJ) on 8 FEB 2020 and will start there 1APR 2020, so using them as a guide for now shows a little over 10 months from class to MIA but of course that’s always changing.

Right now it looks like we are only hiring into ORD, but again that’s always changing and you could get LGA or even an all 175 class and not be able to do MIA until upgrade.

I was up in LGA for a while and knew a guy that would pretty much do the MIA-LGA commute daily to reserve and rarely had issues with it. Not sure about the MIA-ORD commute but the MIA-DFW one is terrible so avoid that at all costs, ha. Maybe somebody else will chime in with the MIA-ORD info!

As of right now on the 145 the quickest way to a line is through LGA, but (queue my favorite saying). They had been hiring heavily into LGA so it’s definitely fat on the FO list right now and there has been a little bit of a reduction in flying out of there.

Like the poster above said, once you upgrade you’ll probably be back to commuting to LGA or ORD for a while again as MIA is pretty senior on the CA side as well.

Good luck and maybe see you around a crew room soon!

(Edit: oh yeah, the flying out of MIA is some of the best in the 145 system to answer your question!)

Everyone thinks their personal commute sucks and MIA guys complain more than most on average in my experience. I've flown with a couple MIA-ORD commuters in the past month and both said they have 0 commuter policies in the last year. That's with the Max grounding dragging heavily on the MIA schedule.
