When the guy talks about once being suicidal, still has personal issues (obviously, thus the very disturbing behavior), AND he’s an airline pilot, you might want to be concerned about your safety. I don’t care how good of a dude this guy is.

So much for the recruitment department and background checks.

Hopefully he is no longer a pilot. Please tell me his medical was revoked due to a past history of suicidal thoughts. Good dude I’m sure. Hope he got the help. Hope he finds a great non-aviation career.

While I don’t want him flying any time soon, I would love to see him get the help he needs and come back as a mentor or someone who can be an ear for pilots having mental health issues. He can still be in aviation in some capacity and he’s still a union brother.

People thinking that mental illness is some incurable disease that makes you untouchable also contributes to the stigma..

Umm…..when he has control of an aircraft with people on board, I don’t give a crap. He needs to lose his medical.

Based on your comment, it would seem that you’d feel the same way about pedophiles then. Same logic says help them, but don’t judge, don’t make them feel “untouchable” or barre them from working with kids, less you contribute to “the stigma”. Hmm ok, guess you’re entitled to your opinions and all but I’m pretty sure the FAA counts any thoughts of suicide as a permanent decline of an airman cert, and I personally think they got that one right. So put me down as +1 for “the stigma”.

I don’t think anyone is arguing whether he should lose his medical. The main point for many is that mental health is ignored and we as men are taught to “just deal with it” which exacerbates the problem. If anything, this case highlights how pilots are just as susceptible to issues as non-pilots, and while the FAA owns us, we have to make sure we respect our
mental health. ALPA recognizes this and has the PPS program for such situations.

Well to me it appeared that someone was indeed arguing that he shouldn’t lose his medical by saying that people “thinking mental health is some incurable mental disease that makes you untouchable only contributes to the stigma.”
