Avoid Altstadt (Old Town) and head over instead to Friesenplatz (Friesen Quarter) on the weekends. My favorite restaurant/bar is All Bar One. From there, you're right next to a street called Friesenstrasse which is lined with bars. It reminds me of being on Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
All Bar One puts them all together, which is a mixture of scene bar, bistro and restaurant. The structure and space attract an elevated clientele. Conveniently All Bar One is located, not accidentally, behind a large business complex with its large sliding glass doors. From outside, the terrace and interior space seem to be one. Outside you can sit nicely and enjoy the human scenery on a nice summer or sunny day. The backdrop here is "seen and be seen", especially on the weekend when the music is cranked up and the airy interior is clouded with smoke.
