As far as your second question. 4 am showtimes from the hub are a bit more rare. They exist on some senior international trips but most of our overnight trips (departing the hub) show between 0130-0300. That said, you can always fly days, or at least avoid the early showtimes from the hub based on what you bid to fly. It gets said a lot but is worth repeating, there’s something for everyone here.
I don't want to come off as that dude who can never leave home without his lady going berserk as soon as he walks out the door. That's 100% not the case. Being gone is part of the life. I just want to find a sustainable mix. Even though ripping around the globe in a 777 making a bazillion dollars a minute sounds awesome...gotta keep the other half happy too. Especially if I could have just gone to United instead...and been there a year earlier. Thank you to everyone who replied, I appreciate the input - even the internet dads warning me about gf based career moves :D. I know, I know! Just trying to get some data points. (I definitely laughed out loud at the Iverson voice btw) |
I know this has been discussed, but how’s AFW looking - trip wise? I’m live in Ft Worth and my have a opportunity with Fedex this year. Are there any day lines or are they all night flying on the 757?

Is day flying accessible for newer folks? I've read "there's a schedule here for everyone" many times here but it seems naive to think you can have it all right off the bat.
) Also don’t necessarily discount the night flying, a lot of it can be pretty darn good (Memphis to Tulsa at 4am, hotel by 6 and you’re done for the day). |

That actually hits the nail on the head. I’ll speak only the the MD fleet, as I honestly don’t follow the other fleets closely. For brand new guys it’s all about trade offs... Day flying is an option with less than six months on the line (I activated a few years ago in June, sat reserve in July and by August had a mix of days and nights). With a bit more seniority you can get exclusive day flying lines, but they’ll have their drawbacks (holidays, weekends, multiple commutes, etc).

I can attest to that. Flying BNA-IND-BNA all week. Hotel pick up at 2230, 40 min flight to Indy and there by 1am local, 1.5hr nap, 40 min flight back in BNA and in bed by 0530. 7 hours door to door with a nap in the middle. Doesn't get much easier than that for the nighttime freight dawg.

Good thing there’s something for everyone! That’s cream of the crop hub turns right there. Quick flight, good nap time, back to BNA. |
Those "nice" night hub turns are an option; so are day hub turns; so is going right to the 777 and never doing hub turns.
It's all relative, but quite different from a pax carrier. Our junior guys don't have to start at ****ty location with least number of seats behind them, then slowly ratchet up the seats behind them incrementally over the years. if you're wanting widebody life / pay, that can happen instantly, or no longer than 2 years (due to system bids) if you want to change your initially awarded airplane. I personally would loathe the BNA scenario described above, but I'm glad people senior to me love it. Widebody intl is my sweet spot. The trash/treasure for FDXers is widely varied, and we don't have to wait for years of seniority to make that happen. |
