Did I miss a contract change or new interpretation of AVA. As I remember it AVA offerings were very rare but once declared for an aircraft and seat then any open time trip put in for would be approved regardless of reserve manning. Now AVA is offered in virtually every seat, every month, but putting in for a trip gets you a "reserve manning is sufficient" denial. (Of course if you put in for an r-day move you'll get a different response)

25.N.4.a. AVA shall be available and assigned to all eligible pilots beginning 7 days prior to showtime for that assignment, based on the reserve forecast.
I'm with you on the double standard....if there are sufficient reserves for AVA denial....then a drop or move request should get approved.

Nothing different.
I submitted requests for AVA as an Engineer 15+ years ago, denied sufficient reserves.
Occasionally did same as an FO under 06 CBA, denied sufficient reserves.
Occasionally do so as a Capt now, sometimes approved-sometimes denied.
Even if the AVA gets kicked back, or when it's not offered, can always VLT
