Default GSO

Random thought….
What was the original idea behind GSO? I have my guesses as a pressure relief valve to take the load off of MEM for east coast traffic. But were there other plans? Anybody in the know? Also, is there a future plan going forward or has it been put to rest for a while? Thanks.

Originally, as I understood it at the time, it was supposed to be a relief for EWR and the inbound/outbound Europe traffic... The GSO airport authority built the west runway for our anticipated volume of traffic and we built the state of the art sort facility…and then never produced the volume. Last I heard the airport authority was not pleased with our act, don’t know if we eventually paid them off or not…as an aside, AFW was supposed to be the facility for all the inbound/outbound South America freight…I guess MIA took that job.

Similar to CAE for UPS. Built s a southeast hub, but never really utilized as such.

AFW was built and paid for by Express dollars. It is now primarily a trucking hub.

AFW was built as coast to coast tie in to relieve MEM. GSO was built as east coast N/S tie in to by pass MEM. With loss of postal and lower volumes plus new sort facilities in MEM those other hubs not needed as much

Just did some research. Looks like the GSO was announced in 1998. GSO facility built in 2009. Parallel runway completed in 2010.

I wonder if the original idea didn’t quite pan out due to the advancement of the digital age and overnight B2B express documents deteriorating alongside that advancement.

So Mr All so smart Merle, you are implying that from 1998 when they had the original plans until now, nothing has changed in the shipping world? Got it, you are the squirrel that lives in a tree and is clueless as ever. Yea it’s a big conspiracy against the pilots!

Noted Aristotle. You still didn't make it through a post with everything spelled correctly. Zip your piehole.

Mrs Merle, You missed your calling as a sixth grade English teacher. Wound so tight spend your time grading APC post for spelling and grammar errors.
