Just an FYI for guys in the pool and trying to get hired.
I counted 40 New Hire unassigned slots from March to Jul 1st on the training letter today:

6 727 MEM F/O
6 727 MEM S/O
13 A-300 HKG F/O
16 MD-11 MEM F/O

There were 6-8 CGN 757 F/O slots a few days ago, but, they are gone now?

Good luck...

Outside Activities????

For Albie or anyone else familiar with the selection process:

How would FedEx (or any employer) know what type of outside activities that anyone might participate in? For example, if FedEx would prefer not to hire mountain climbers, cave divers, motorcylce racers, etc.......how would they know? Are they even allowed to ask such questions during an interview? Can they hire an outside firm to perform a confidential investigation on someone that they would like to hire? (Sounds expensive!).

Just wondering if this is going to become the latest trend in corporate hiring methods, at airlines and perhaps elsewhere.

That's easy. They call your references, then ask if there are other people that you both know who they might contact. Think about it, those three people could probably compile a Wikipedia article on you. Choose your references wisely.

27. Are you presently on Active Duty or a member of any military Reserve or National Guard Unit?

Skeptic, let's not get too paranoid here. If FedEx really cares what outside activities you do, they'll probably ask your references or just look you up on social media. Most probably, they really don't care, as long as your background check comes back clean, and they've not unearthed any lies you've told along the way. Just be honest on your application, and if you're lucky enough to gain an interview, be yourself.

I'm not sure I can say anything factual about the new process. What I know is that the firm that has done the Delta hiring for years is now the operator.

Delta was always big about asking about past attendance--I think that was a big discriminator for them with their regional feed guys. They also favored LCA, sim instructors, and guys who "invested" themselves into their company. There are data points all over the bell curve of candidate types, but in general those seemed to be favored traits.

As for references--here's a solid tip. If you don't provide each of your refs with your bio, resume, and maybe a bullet point summary of a few of your hightpoints, you may be missing out. Every ref I had for JetBlue or FedEx had a sheet with my name, my spouse's name, kid's name, assignment history, and some highlighted info about me. Back in 2001-2003, the Jetblue interviewers "interviewed" your refs. I was told by my squadron CC "I thought they were interviewing ME for the job..." Just like when you had some OPR bullets you passed to a supervisor for your performance reports, I provided my refs detailed anecdotes and facts reminding them of stuff we had done together or places I'd made a contribution to the unit. None of it was made up, but I didn't want them playing "stump the dummy" with my bosses--whose time was valuable--and have him draw a blank on any question they might have.

Why include family? Well..if a ref says "oh yeah, we used to go boating with his family all the time out at Shell Island..." and the interviewer says "really? What are his wife and daughter's names?" If your answer is "uuuuh......" you just lost a lot of credibility. So--the lesson is simple: Be honest, but prep prep prep your refs. Don't make them do the hard work--its YOU than wants this job. Give them the tools to help you along.

Birdeater...I like you.

I have always thought the interview process at FedEx was largely "intellectually honest..." They actually appear to want to hire those they call in to interview.

I know SWA is a great company for the folks who work there, but I have never understood their hiring model. Then again, I guess it sells a lot of type ratings for their buddies at Higher Power and K&S.

I completely enjoy helping people get ready for any interview--especially when they are going to their first choice. A lot of good folks are at SWA, and more will join them. That said...getting hired there is a pain, and your synopsis had coffee going through my nose.

....+1 to both posts. Spot On, Gentleman!

More sage advice from da Man!!

I've had 7 guys approach me in the past year for FEDEX recommendation letters.

I found it insightful on the different approaches --- some with a full resume and "suggested" rec letter already typed up.

Others with nothing, expecting me to remember our time at Base X together years ago.

Hmmmm.

I logged onto Pilot Credentials and on the first page, it stated, "FedEx - You are in the FedEx pool." Can someone explain what that means? Did I make the cut for an interview? Thanks. Does anyone know when the interviews will start again?
