Congrats on your new job. I am a military guy a few years from retirement hoping for a FedEx job. I am looking for an example resume to mold mine. Also is there any gouge for the testing and especially the cognitive testing. Thanks

I won't offer any other advice other than new hires should seriously think about any commute. I'm not trying to drag this into a debate about Memphis, that is pointless. Been a commuter the whole time with FDX and been here over a decade.

It is getting tougher and tougher to commute. Double Deadheads are great, but unless you are living in one of our Hub Cities or a Hub City for one the Major Passenger Airlines, it is still tough. Changes in the new contract helps commuters, but it still sucks. Commuting will always affect multiple aspects of your career no matter how senior you are. With the fleet renewal, commutes on the 757/767 and MD-11s are making it tougher too.

Granted, it is great to have the option commute and it works well for many. However, looking back, the price has been hefty both on QOL and on earning potential over my career thus far.

If I could do it over, just for QOL reasons, I would move near the Memphis area. North Mississippi, Collierville, TN and Fayette County, TN offer a lot options. Options are out there too that are doable with a drive commute as a back up to the winged commute. The outer loop, (385 Loop) helps with options too. Just my 2 cents.

Making the move to any domicile isn't for everyone, but deciding to commute for a career isn't one that should be made without some thought.

Good luck to those applying, congratulations to those who have gotten hired. This is a great place to be!

That's been my strategy, and it makes for a lot less stress.

When I lived in BHM, I could show for my jumpseat, have something happen, jump in my car and still make most show times for 777 departures.

Yes, I'd be protected, but that doesn't help much when you lose a 70-hour trip because the jumpseat crapped out.....

I'd look at BHM, MOB, MSY.... and there's many others.

Now that's what I call dedication!!! Thank God they called and you interviewed well. Guess there won't be any "FDX vs Airline XYZ" threads out of you.... Congrats!

Ooops. I thought you had already been hired, my bad. Guess I need to learn to read again. Good luck on the interview. No pressure, right? ;)

7) There are rumors of perhaps 500 retiring next December 31st.

That's almost 10% of the pilots.
Why are so many leaving?

Because it's a rumor

We hear these rumors all the time. However, I do think we will see a decent number retire on Dec 31. Many retirement eligible guys were waiting to see if the retirement would improve before making the jump. We just signed a contract that gives a bonus for those giving a years notice and retiring on Dec 31. I have no idea how many put in their notice, but it's a one time deal. If you change your mind, you aren't eligible for the money again. So I think most of those that put in notice will actually retire.

I have no idea what the real number is. I doubt it was 500, but I suppose it's possible. If I had to guess I'd say about 300, but it's just a guess. I will say the company is really ramping up hiring.
