No I did not, I did not know I was going to solo that day and we had not really planned on it, just another day practicing in the pattern, so I had a somewhat nice shirt on that was too dark to see writing on it anyway. The tradition is still alive and well though, I see them hanging in other airports all the time.

Well at my college, I myself, nor my only solo there I did nothing. I wasn't really led into it at all. Once I got out I did do it as an Option to those that really wanted to do it. At my flight school, we had a wall of cut-shirts and pictures of the students and instructor to mark that wonderful day. I think almost all of my students there did it. I myself wish that my instructor would've taken the time to not only do that, but also let me in on why it's done and the tradition behind it all.

I had mine cut on the 16th birthday solo. It was still hanging up years later, but I doubt it still there after 25 years! When I instructed I told each student about the tradition and gave them the option of doing it, so they could be prepared with a T-shirt that I could cut and decorate. I hung them up for awhile and let them take it when done with their training. I got really excited when I soloed someone. They got the T-shirt cut and a certificate. One school even had a Polaroid camera to take a photo in front of their solo plane. That was cool too.
It kind of makes me want to instruct again- part time. I have 1600 dual given in GA aircraft and 2595 dual given/checkairman in a jet. Too bad my certificates are expired!

I expected to have my shirt cut after my first solo but my instructor said "you paid good money for that shirt, why waste it?". It made sense to me so I never questioned it. Now, if a student wants to have their shirt cut then I will cut it for them, but I dont push it on them. Its up to the individual. I do at least give them a certificate for there achievment.
